Charles Oaks Vancouver, Wash.

Memorial service for Charles Louis Oakes, 81, will be held at a later date. Vancouver Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Oaks died Monday.

He graduated from the University of Idaho and taught school in Idaho for a short time.

He later worked as a transport operator for Consolidated Freightways for more than 30 years and retired in 1982.

He moved to Vancouver seven years ago from Spokane where he lived for over 22 years.

Mr. Oaks was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a son, George Oaks of Farmington, Calif.; a daughter, Charlynn Taketa of Vancouver, and a brother, George Oaks of Coeur d’Alene.

Jean Silver Spokane

Service for B. Jean Silver, 73, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Silver died Tuesday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and Eastern Washington University.

Mrs. Silver was a certified public accountant. She worked for the city of Spokane in Economic Development.

She was a member of the Washington State House of Representatives from 1983 to 1997. She was the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee. She also served on the board of directors for Washington Water Power Co.

Her husband of 53 years, Chuck, died in 1999.

Survivors include three sons, Doug, Mitch and Kipp Silver, all of Spokane; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sylvia (Osborn) Miller Naples, Idaho

Service for Sylvia Elizabeth (Osborn) Miller, 84, will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Bonners Ferry (Idaho) Funeral Home. Private burial will take place at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Mrs. Miller, who was born in Bemidji, Minn., died Tuesday.

She graduated from high school in Arlington, Wash., in 1933 and then from the American Business College in Seattle before becoming a nanny for Navy families.

Mrs. Miller traveled to various places as a nanny and eventually settled in California.

She married Eugene Miller in 1938, and they moved to the Tri-Cities (Wash.)-area where they lived for many years and her husband retired as a police captain.

Mrs. Miller and her husband built a log home in Highland Flats near Naples in 1979. Her husband died in 1998.

Mrs. Miller was involved with Camp Fire Girls and was an avid gardener, craft artist and dollmaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Eugenia Zimmerle of Portland and Debra Miller Peters of Kennewick; three brothers, Merle Osborn of Arlington, Keith Osborn of Everett and Ken Osborn of Bremerton; and three grandchildren.

Vivian Connors Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Vivian Evelyn Connors, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cusick (Wash.) Community Church. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Connors, who was born in Salix, Iowa, died Tuesday.

She grew up in Iowa and graduated from high school before moving west.

Mrs. Connors had lived in the Newport area for more than 40 years.

In 1969 she married Dale Connors and was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1999.

Survivors include five sons, Michael Connors and Curt Elkington, both of Spokane, Larry Holland of Sandpoint, Patrick Connors of Yakima and Richard Hearder of Colorado; six daughters, Evelyn Elkington of Spokane, Debbie DesJarlais of Elk, Karen Chapin and Carol Morales, both of Newport, Sharon Mattson of Everett and Lorraine Fehrs of Libby, Mont.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Florenda `Ferlee’ Lund Harrison, Idaho

Service for Florenda “Ferlee” Lund, 86, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church in Harrison. Burial will follow at the Harrison Cemetery. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lund, a lifelong Harrison resident, died Wednesday.

She grew up in Harrison and graduated from Harrison High School in 1932 and then worked at various jobs, including Greiner’s Mercantile and Rose’s Cafe as a cook and waitress.

Mrs. Lund married Al Lund in 1950, and they lived in Harrison where she worked at The Harrison Trading Co., Cope’s Store, the Springston Store and the post office.

She later took a journalism class from the University of Idaho and then wrote articles for the Kellogg newspaper and the St. Maries Gazette Record.

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the Harrison Hot Shots Kitchen Band.

Mrs. Lund was preceded in death by her husband, Al in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Rich Lund of Harrison; a sister, Rose Rinaldi of Kellogg; two grandchildren, Stefany and Kristen; and two great-grandchildren.

Eugene Johnson Spokane

Service for Eugene “Gene” Johnson, 87, will be at 11 a.m. today at Mary Queen Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Calvin, N.D., died Tuesday.

He lived in Spokane for more than 55 years.

Mr. Johnson worked as a mechanic at Allis-Chalmers for 40 years. He retired in 1975.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Evelyn; three daughters, Betty DeMonnin and Judy Koller, both of Spokane, and Sharon Miller of Colbert; a brother, Carl Johnson of Colorado; two sisters, Byrtle Craig of Bayview, Idaho, and LeMora Finkas of Toledo, Wash.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Wayne Smith Pullman

Service for Wayne E. Smith, 72, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Princeton (Idaho) Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Pullman City Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Northwood, N.D., died Monday.

He grew up in Larimore, N.D., and graduated from Larimore High School in 1946.

He married Corabelle Anderson in 1954.

In 1955 Mr. Smith graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho, and took his first pastorate at the Church of the Nazarene in Maple Valley, Wash. In 1961 he moved to Milton-Freewater, Ore., where he served the Nazarene church until 1967. He then moved to Sunnyside, Wash., where he was pastor at the Nazarene church until 1976. He moved to Lewiston in 1976 and served at Lewiston Orchards Church of the Nazarene until 1985.

He moved to Princeton in 1985 and was a pastor until retiring in 1995. He moved to Pullman where he has an interim pastor at the Pullman Church of the Nazarene for a short time.

In 1997 he came out of retirement and served the Palouse Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dave Smith of Moscow, Idaho, and Steve Smith of Boise; a daughter, Christina Kessler of Clarkston, Wash.; two brothers, Clayton Smith of Maple Valley and Lyndell Smith of Larimore; seven sisters, Marian Aaker and Laverne Solum, both of Fargo, N.D., Marjorie Davidson of Grand Forks, N.D., Maxine Barry of Larimore, Eleray Beauford of St. Paul, Minn., Mavis Wold of Forest Lake, Minn., and Janice Jones of San Antonio; and two grandchildren.

Dane Cook Post Falls

Memorial service for Dane E. Cook, 20, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Spokane Spiritual Center. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cook, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Dec. 14.

He from Post Falls High School in 1997 and had worked as a dishwasher at Tomato Street restaurant.

Mr. Cook was an aspiring artist and musician who played the guitar.

Survivors include his parents, Jerry and Leslie Cook of Post Falls; a brother, Lee Cook of Post Falls; and grandparents, Bud and Betty Jo Cook of Spokane, and Shirley Oliver of Clarkston, Wash.
