Springing Into Action Can Take Time

OK, spring starts next week.

But let’s all remain calm. You have The Slice’s permission to wait a while before contemplating yard work.

It will still be there in May.

* Possible reasons you have a hard time maintaining close friendships:

1. Busy reading self-help books.

2. Friends tend to be more demanding than the TV set.

3. Other people get on your nerves.

4. Fear of rejection.

5. The realization that you haven’t been on the same wavelength with anyone since you were 14.

6. People actually expect you to listen to them.

7. Eventually, one of you decides not to apologize.

8. You are haunted by the suspicion that you deserve friends who are cooler and more successful.

9. Others find your personality repellent.

10. Sooner or later, being last on someone’s list of priorities gets old.

* Real words work well: Assuming that everyone understands all your e-mail shorthand and acronyms invites confusion.

* Just wondering: What music do you put on when you want help remembering a time when you were all promise and potential?

* It’s a fact: If you stand outside and stare at the side of your house long enough, it’s possible to convince yourself it doesn’t need painting.

* Not all Census forms are exactly alike: A friend in Stevens County urged us to print that. Apparently some of the retirees who live near him had suspected that there was something fishy about not everyone receiving identical questionnaires.

* Washington’s official state mammal: “Roadkill whitetail deer.” - Jeannie Maki

* Overheard at a local daycare: On Thursday morning, a little boy asked, “Is tomorrow Cleopatra Day?”

* Purse History Department: In Leslie Holt’s family, the story has become a treasured bit of lore.

They were at Disneyland in the late ‘60s when Leslie’s mother, Marbary Holt, bought two tacos. She ate one and then wrapped up the second taco and put it in her purse.

Leslie Holt can tell the rest.

“The next day, to our horror, she dug it out and ate it.”

* Warm-up question: What would you title your set-in-Spokane romance novel?

* Today’s Slice question: Which of your co-workers goes through the biggest personality change when the big boss appears on the scene?
