Aaron Broesch Spokane
Inurnment for Aaron L. Broesch, 69, will be at 2 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery. Memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Cheney, Mr. Broesch died Tuesday.
He worked as a meat cutter for Armour Meats in Spokane from 1950 to 1971 and then in Portland for 13 years. He retired in 1984 and moved back to Spokane.
Mr. Broesch was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Viola; a daughter, Angela Johnston of Prescott, Ariz.; three stepsons, Tom, Dennis and Robert Thompson, all of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Terri Venie of Spokane; a brother, Arnold Broesch of Newport, Wash.; and five grandchildren.
Edward Cenis Spokane
Memorial service for Edward N. Cenis will be at 3 p.m. today at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cenis, 81, died Monday. He was born in Red Lodge, Mont., and moved to Spokane in 1939.
During World War II he worked at the shipyards in Bremerton. He returned to Spokane in 1945.
Mr. Cenis owned and operated Cabinet Kraft in Spokane and retired in 1981.
He was a member of the 120 Hunting Club.
His wife of 52 years, Betty, died in 1992.
Survivors include three daughters, Diane Morrison and Jennifer Thornton, both of Spokane, and Linda Ashmore of Vancouver, British Columbia; a son, Daniel Cenis of Spokane; a brother, William Cenis of Plains, Mont.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Humane Society or the American Lung Association.
Esther Armstrong Spokane
Service for Esther Elizabeth Armstrong, 92, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
A 90-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Armstrong died Monday. She was born in Duluth, Minn.
She worked as a legal secretary for the law office of Patrick Shellady.
Mr. Armstrong was a member of Shilo Hills Baptist Church.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Bafus of Rosalia, Wash.; a son, Dennis Armstrong of Richland; two sisters, Irene Chantry and Dorothy McMahon; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Lyndelle Pierce Otis Orchards
Service for Lyndelle H. Pierce, 88, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Private burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.
A lifetime Otis Orchards resident, Mr. Pierce died Tuesday.
He grew apples and other produce and had worked for Comet Trailer. He retired in 1976.
Mr. Pierce was a member of Liberty Lake Community Church.
His wife, Evelyn, died in 1970.
Survivors include three sons, LeRoy Pierce of Newman Lake, and Gary and Ron Pierce, both of Otis Orchards; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

William Bock Spokane
Graveside service for William M. Bock, 79, will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 53-year Spokane resident, Mr. Bock died Monday. He was born in Washington state.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He worked for Spokane County for more than 35 years. He retired as a crane operator in 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Eloise; two sons, Tom and Jerry Bock, both of Spokane; a daughter, Barbara Bock of Sandpoint; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
John Haugan Spokane
Memorial service for John F. Haugan, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Spokane Valley Baptist Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Chicago, Mr. Haugan died Saturday.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Haugan received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1949. He received a doctorate of divinity from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1951.
In 1952 he became pastor of the Belfair (Wash.) Baptist Church. He was transferred in 1959 to Spokane Valley Baptist Church.
He received a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Whitworth College in 1964 and became pastor of First Baptist Church in Missoula in 1965.
In 1970 he began serving senior citizens. He was the staff coordinator for the Montana delegation to the White House Conference on Aging from 1970 to 1971. He also was a founder of the Missoula Senior Citizen Center.
He returned to Spokane in 1972 and became the first administrator for the Lilac Plaza retirement homes. He was also a consultant for other retirement housing projects in Eastern Washington.
After retiring he continued to be active in retirement planning and senior health promotion through his leadership in various nonprofit organizations.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Ruby; a son, Tim Haugan; two daughters, Becky Schneider and Nancy Haugan; a sister, Juanita Haugan; and six grandsons.
Memorial contributions may be made to Spokane Valley Baptist Church, the Senior Homes Foundation or Whitworth College.
Dennis Arnes Bakersfield, Calif.
Graveside service for Dennis D. Arnes, 76, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Arnes, who was born in San Francisco, died Monday.
He moved to Spokane in 1940 and served in the Navy from 1944 to 1954.
He lived in Spokane until 1995 and also spent some time in St. John, Wash.
He worked for Whitman County and as a truck driver.
Mr. Arnes moved to Bakersfield five years ago.
Survivors include his companion, Marie Belknap; three sons, Daniel Arnes of Salt Lake City, J.D. Elliott of Greenwood, Ind., and Michael LaBarge of Phoenix; a daughter, Glory Raymond of Bakersfield; a brother, Melvin Arnes of Grand Coulee, Wash.; a sister, Jody Hull of Spokane; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth Jennen-Paulsen Spokane
Memorial service for Elizabeth Ireen Jennen-Paulsen, 57, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jennen-Paulsen died Monday. She was a lifetime Spokane resident and graduated from Otis Orchards High School.
Mrs. Jennen-Paulsen was a secretary for a local import-auto repair business.
Survivors include her companion, Russ Paulsen; two sons, Jeffrey and Jerry Jennen, and two daughters, Janell Jennen and Jackie Lockwood, all of Spokane; five sisters, Jean Midkiff, Jody Martin and Janey Chenoweth, all of Spokane, Lolly Collinsworth of Springdale, Wash., and Lois Chavez of Las Vegas; and numerous grandchildren.
Jess Lewis Spokane
Graveside service for Jess A. Lewis, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Usk, Wash., Mr. Lewis died Sunday.
His family moved to Spokane when he was a child.
He served in the Ninth Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Lewis worked for Lakeland Village in Medical Lake and retired as the supervisor of the sewage treatment facility.
His wife, Mary, preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Lewis of Spokane and Bob Lewis of Nine Mile Falls; two daughters, Mary Lewis of Spokane and Linda Hildebrand of Salt Lake City; five brothers; two sisters; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Melvin Nelson Spokane
Private graveside service for James Melvin Nelson, 95, will be at 3 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.
Mr. Nelson, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.
He received a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Washington.
Mr. Nelson taught at the Millwood Grade School. He later taught at Quincy (Wash.) High School and at Wenatchee Junior High School.
In 1931 he married Lucille Greenlee and they moved to Spokane in 1937.
Mr. Nelson served as an elementary school principal at Browne, Willard, Bemiss, Grant and Hamilton elementary schools. He retired in 1970.
He served as president of the Spokane Teachers Credit Union for seven years.
Mr. Nelson was a member and past president of the Independence Beach Association at Loon Lake. He also was a member of the Washington State and Spokane retired teachers associations, the Washington and National education associations and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was a member of the Riverside Masonic Lodge in Wenatchee and the Scottish Rite Bodies. He served as a worthy patron of the Audubon Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
His wife died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, James Nelson Jr. of Valparaiso, Ind.; and a grandson.

Evelyn Barteni Coeur d’Alene
Service for Evelyn L. Barteni, 76, will be at 1 p.m. today at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene with burial to follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Barteni, who was born in Waubay, S.D., died Tuesday.
She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1946 and was involved in the auction business until the death of her first husband, Albert Zucally, in 1973.
In 1974 she married Paul Barteni. She had worked at Heritage Place and Coeur d’Alene Homes for 12 years.
Survivors include her husband; two stepsons, Paul Barteni Jr. of Corvallis, Mont., and Christopher Barteni of Caldwell, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Rose Marie Barteni of Spokane; a brother, Clarence Bundrock of Tacoma; and one grandson.

Clyde Brown Spokane
Memorial service for Clyde Merlin Brown, 68, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Valley Fourth Memorial Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 38-year Spokane resident, Mr. Brown died Wednesday. He was born in Echo, Ore.
He graduated from high school in Pendleton, Ore.
Mr. Brown served in the Army National Guard for two years and then in the Army for two years in Korea after the Korean War.
He worked as a manager for Jaremko Motors and had been working for Syncor for the past eight years.
Mr. Brown was a member of Valley Fourth Memorial Church.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Doris; two sons, Michael Brown of Colbert and Terry Brown of Bellingham; a daughter, Julie Benton of Spokane; a brother, Leo Brown, and a sister, Elsie Holmes, both of Pendleton; and five grandchildren.
Mildred `Millie’ Potts Spokane
Graveside service for Mildred Irene “Millie” Potts was Wednesday at Springdale Community Cemetery.
Mrs. Potts, 75, died Monday. She was born in Blanco, Texas.
She had lived in Spokane for 38 years, was a homemaker and a member of Christ’s Gospel Fellowship in Spokane.
Two husbands preceded her in death, Herbert Hochstedler died in 1961, and Robert Potts died in 1992.
She is survived by four sons, Herbert, Gordon and David Hochstedler, and Robert Potts, all of Spokane; a daughter, Sharon Reed of Spokane; a brother, Warren Ladd of Arizona; three sisters, Margaret Rushton of Spokane, Vivian Hauser of Arizona and Elsie Nettles of Nevada; 17 grandchildren and 24 greatgrandchildren.

Sarah Wolff Odessa, Wash.
Service for Sarah Wolff, 81, was Monday at Zion Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Odessa. Burial followed at Odessa Cemetery.
A 46-year Odessa resident, Mrs. Wolff died March 16. She was born in North Dakota.
In 1940 she married Henry Wolff. She was a homemaker and had worked as a nurses aide.
Mrs. Wolff was a member of Odessa Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Zion Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Women’s Auxiliary.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Les Wolff of Mica; three daughters, Mavis Smith of Odessa, Donna Schmierer of Wilbur, Wash., and Arlene Loney of Kennewick; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Emma `Connie’ Knutson Spokane

Mrs. Knutson, who died Monday, was born in Absarokee, Mont.
In 1926 she married Selmar Knutson. They lived Montana.
Mrs. Knutson moved to Spokane in 1956 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
Her husband died in 1946.
Survivors include a son, Oliver Knutson of Avila Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Rose Valsvig of Spokane; a brother, two granddaughters and four great-grandsons.

Maxine Taylor Spokane
No service will be held for Maxine F. Taylor, 90, at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A longtime Spokane resident, Mrs. Taylor died Wednesday. She was born in Athol, Idaho.
She married Willard Taylor in 1932. Mrs. Taylor worked as a clerk in the Spokane County records office. She retired in 1975.
She was a member of Hope Rebekah Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star, White Rose Chapter.
Her husband died in 1968.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Dillon of Spokane; a son, Robert Taylor of Spokane; a brother, Melvin Horseman of New Richmond, Wis.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Thomas Raymond Spokane
Memorial service for Thomas A. Raymond, 87, will be at 7 p.m. next Friday at Knox Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Raymond, who was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia, died March 16.
He lived in Spokane for more than 50 years.
During World War II he worked as a pipe fitter for the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash.
After the war he worked as a heating/ventilation/air-conditioning technician, a carpenter and construction engineer with Henry George and Sons, and Purvis Construction. He retired as the design engineer for Feed Systems Inc.
His wife, Eva, died in 1982.
Mr. Raymond is survived by two sons, David and Richard Raymond; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
