Classes, Workshops Included In Art Event
The Procession of the Species celebration, Spokane’s first in a planned annual celebration of the natural world using art, music and dance, begins at 1 p.m. April 22 in Riverfront Park.
There will be free community art workshops to help people get into the celebration.
A workshop on constructing life masks, or paper mache masks, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. April 9 and 16.
Other classes include: basic paper mache, 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and April 8; species sculptures, 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday; drum making, 7 to 9 p.m. April 9; drumming for the procession, 7 to 9 p.m. April 21; and community Thursdays, when you can work on your creature creations with others, 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 13 and 20.

Classes
* Spokane Art School will hold workshops during Spokane School District 81’s spring break, April 3 through 6.
Workshops in a variety of visual arts media, including beads, nature art, drawing, kites, glass mosaics, cartooning, portrait drawing, ArtStart, copper enameling, painting techniques, ceramics and more.
Workshop tuition is $14 a class, or $35 for all day. All classes will be at the school, 920 N. Howard. For more information, call the school at 328-0900.
* The Deer Park Arts Commission is sponsoring a series of classes and workshops for teenagers through adults.
Classes include oil painting, paper mache workshops, acrylic painting classes, and scherenschnitte workshop, creating art with scissors or knives.

* George Leep, author of six books on outdoor photography, will teach a two-day workshop focusing on techniques for capturing wildlife and landscape photos, Saturday and next Sunday at Spokane Falls Community College’s Music Building, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle is hosting its 23rd annual Art Exhibition from May 3 through June 30, at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.
The league is searching for minority entrants. Added to this year’s event will be a new scholarship program to support students interested in pursuing fine-art studies.

Auditions
* The Lake City Playhouse will stage auditions for “Oliver” at 5:30 p.m. Monday for those 6 to 18; adults will audition at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the playhouse, 1320 E. Garden in Coeur d’Alene.

* Spokane Civic Theatre will hold auditions at 7 p.m. April 3 and 4 at Cavanaughs Inn at the Park.
Civic’s season finale, “Pippin,” will be directed by Troy Nickerson, with Carol Miyamoto as music director. The cast will include up to 12 men and 12 women who are 20 to 50 years old, and one boy.

At Maryhill
The Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale, Wash., will be open free during April to those who live in Adams, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens and Whitman counties. A driver’s license is all that’s needed for admission.
Exhibits include “Queen Marie and the Romanovs,” “Art of the Firebird: Russian miniature paintings by Pavel Tikhomirov,” “Contemporary Prints From the Jordan D. Schnitzer Collection,” and “Casting Concepts: Rodin Bronzes.
