Gold prices tumbled Monday as the metals market latched onto a report that France is considering selling gold reserves to bolster its pension system. Gold for April delivery tumbled to a two-month low of $280.20 per ounce, before edging slightly higher to close at $280.10, down $4.60, or 1.6 percent, for the day.

Monsanto Co. is selling its sweetener ingredient business, including the NutraSweet brand name, to a Boston-based investment firm, J.W. Childs Equity Partners II LP, for $440 million in cash.

Drugstore chain Walgreen Co. said second-quarter earnings rose 19.3 percent.

Waste Management Inc., citing some $100 million in accounting expenses resulting from a companywide audit, lost $114.7 million in the fourth quarter.

Qwest Communications International Inc. has entered a multi-year pact with IBM, which will build 28 U.S. Internet data centers for Qwest. IBM will pay to use Qwest’s network of fiber-optic lines to carry Internet traffic to and from the facilities.
