Depth Counts When It Gets To Track Postseason Several Individual State Champions Return This Season

Most North Idaho high school track teams have a standout or two.

But it is the teams that prove to have the most depth that will win regional or district titles this spring.

Not one team will win a majority of individual events come postseason. So it will be the teams scoring the most second- through sixth-place points that will take home championship trophies.

When it comes to state, several Panhandle athletes will contend for gold and other medals.

Here are the defending individual champs:

Janee Andre (Coeur d’Alene) A-1 girls long jump

Carly Smith (Lake City) A-1 girls pole vault

Jenny Liou (Moscow) A-1 girls 800 meters

Heather Hoeck (Kellogg) A-2 girls 200

Zach Penney and Craig Zanetti (Wallace) A-3 boys 400 relay

Here’s a look at how area athletes qualify for state, which will be held May 19-20 for all classifications at Boise State University.

A-1

Inland Empire League teams will gather at Lewiston for the Region I meet May 12-13.

The top three individuals in each event advance to state. Although atlarge berths also are available, just the winning relay team is guaranteed a state berth.

A-2

The Intermountain League teams will join Grangeville and Orofino at the District I-II meet at Lakeland May 12-13.

The top four individuals in each event and winning relay teams advance to state.

A-3

Wallace and Lakeside athletes will square off against Central Idaho League teams at Kamiah in the District I-II meet May 12-13.

The top four individuals and winning relay teams go to state.

A-4

North Star League teams join White Pine League counterparts for the District I-II meet May 12-13 at Kamiah.

The top three individuals and top two relays will qualify for the state meet.
