Conceived as a means to simplify online travel, keywords have become the latest flash point in the Internet browser war.

Keywords enable surfers to reach sites by typing words or phrases into browsers instead of long addresses.

But Microsoft Corp. and America Online Inc. are backing competing standards. So consumers may be left with a system that takes them to different places based on which cab they hail.
