Ferris Golfers Win Titles
(From Replay, May 3, 2000): Marty Nauert of Central Valley and Matt Jorgensen of Mead both shot 71 in Monday’s Greater Spokane League golf tournament at Downriver. They were misidentified Tuesday.
There was little suspense as Greater Spokane League golfers wound up their four-tournament format Monday at Downriver.
The Ferris boys and girls, both defending State 4A champions, completed what they had started by wrapping up GSL titles.
Freshman Alex Prugh shot a 5-under-par 66 to lead the Saxons to a 354 total and seven-shot advantage over runner-up Mead. That left Ferris with a 13-shot margin in the season competition, 1,459 to 1,472 for Mead.
Gonzaga Prep senior Dan Potter was a shot back at 67 and Ferris senior Corey Prugh and Mead junior David Fern shot 68s.
With junior Megan Breer leading four Saxons in the top six scorers with a 9-over 82, Ferris compiled a 438 Monday to easily outdistance runner-up Gonzaga Prep’s 482. In the season series, Ferris won by 26 shots, 1,638 to East Valley’s 1,664.
Lewis and Clark sophomore Sarah Bassett matched Breer at 82. G-Prep sophomore Katie Brophy shot 83.
Baseball
Derek Garcia pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight and walking only one, as Coeur d’Alene dispatched visiting Post Falls 9-3 in a Border League game… . Lewiston put together six of its seven hits in the first two innings to score four runs en route to a 6-2 win over visiting Cheney. Steve Storey pitched a six-hitter, striking out three and walking one for the Bengals.
Andy Wiley pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out nine, as Northport defeated Columbia 22-0 to complete a Panorama League sweep. Wiley, who walked three, also contributed to the Mustangs’ offense with his sixth home run. The Mustangs won the opener 10-1.
Softball
Anna Vagstad pitched a three-hitter, striking out four with just one walk, and Mead nickle-and-dimed its way to a 6-1 Greater Spokane League win at East Valley. Sophomore Jen Brown of Mead went 3 for 3 with a double and two singles to lead the Panthers’ 11-hit attack.
Chewelah used an eight-run fifth inning to highlight a comeback from a 10-1 defict and defeat Newport 14-10 in the second game of a makeup Great Northern League doubleheader after the Grizzlies captured the opener 9-4. Peggy Davis was 3 for 4, scored five runs and drove in two and Katie Birklid scored two runs and drove in two, including the tying run in the decisive fifth inning.
