The Ritzville Triathlon, a day of trap shooting and golfing followed up by a few frames at the local bowling alley, is set for May 20. Hearty souls wanting to take part may sign up at the Brunswick Tavern or call Walt Weber at (509) 659-0233.

The Friends of the Republic Library organization has received the Washington Library Friends and Trustees Association’s distinguished service award from the Washington Library Association. The award was given for interest and contribution in development of library service.

Grant County

Moses Lake

Jim Nielson and Jamie Wise, both standout wrestlers for Moses Lake High School in 1980, won national championships in Las Vegas last week. They need to raise $3,000 each to attend the world championships in Germany this August. Wise wrestles in the 152-pound weight class, Nielson in 268-pound class.

Only $7,000 is needed to finish the local Habitat for Humanity home that began taking shape here last year. Ben and Becky Peterson will be the owners of the home, which will cost $35,000-$40,000. Volunteers have been laboring on the house each weekend for nearly six months. The crew hopes to have the Petersons in their home by July 1. Donations of cash or labor are being sought to finish the project.

Pend Oreille County

With state testing of student knowledge under way, the Newport School District is busy identifying problems the kids might have in taking the achievement tests. One problem is writing quality. Although teachers feel English skills are fine for writing essays and stories, problems with technical writing for science and math problems have been found. The school will look at emphasizing technical writing.

The Cheney Parks and Recreation Department is surveying Cheney residents over the phone regarding what they think about parks services. Parks personnel will be calling people at around 6:30 p.m. today, Thursday and Monday. For more information, call 235-7295.

Residents are cautioned to watch out for cougars. At least one of the big cats was spotted in residential areas of Solar Pines and the Sandy Loop area of Sand Canyon. Domestic animals have been hurt or killed, while a horse was badly mauled.

Valdasue Steele, a University of Idaho extension agent, was selected to participate in a leadership program by the Leadership Idaho Agricultural Foundation. Steele was one of 16 statewide and two Panhandle region candidates selected.

Bonner County

A community awareness walk for Adolescent Suicide Awareness and Prevention is set for Thursday. The group was recognized as the outstanding prevention program in North Idaho at a recent Idaho prevention conference held in Sun Valley. Members will start the walk at 4:30 p.m. at Farmin Park and continue to the City Beach as part of their Yellow Ribbon Week, which continues through May 6. At the beach, a potluck barbecue will be followed by a candlelight vigil at dusk. Mayor Paul Graves will officiate at the vigil.

Bonners Ferry

The fifth annual International Migratory Bird Day celebration is May 13 at the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, five miles west of Bonners Ferry. Included attractions will be mist netting demonstrations, spotting scope stations, wildlife presentations and building of bluebird houses to take home. Lunch, souvenir T-shirt and posters will be available.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is looking for volunteers to become camp counselors Aug. 5-12 for over 4,000 campers, 6 to 21 years old, expected to attend the MDA camp near Worley.

Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson, with the help of the Idaho attorney general’s office, decided it’s not legal for District Court Judge John Stegner to decide if county funds can be used to pay for bottled drinking water for court employees. It was also decided that county commissioners had the right to make that decision. Thompson has been at odds with the commissioners over the quality of the courthouse drinking water and has been buying water himself for his employees.

Sunnyside School’s program will receive the honor of being a National Distinguished Title 1 School. The award is given annually to schools that meet rigorous standards. Teachers, Linda Cougher and Diana Wick are attending a ceremony today in Indianapolis, Ind., to receive the certificate and a banner signifying the honor.
