Welzie Allen, M.D. Spokane

Memorial service Dr. Welzie “Wes” Allen, 63, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Spokane Opera House. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Allen, who was born in Pittsburgh, died Thursday from injuries suffered in a boating accident on Lake Pend Oreille.

He was raised in Cleveland. He received a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and graduated from medical school at Ohio State University. He did post-graduate work at Yale University.

Dr. Allen served as a battalion surgeon for the Army for three years, spending the majority of his enlistment in Germany before moving to Spokane in 1970.

He began practicing general pediatrics and pediatric cardiology with the Spokane Pediatric Group in 1970. In 1985 he joined the Northwest Neonatology Group, concentrating on the care of ill newborn babies while continuing in his speciality of pediatric cardiology.

Dr. Allen served as president of the Deaconess Medical Staff, the Deaconess Foundation and the Deaconess Medical Center Board. He also served as chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Deaconess Medical Center, where he was also the director of the intensive care unit. He was involved with newborns and cardiology patients in the pediatric unit at Sacred Heart Hospital.

He helped to start the airlift transportation service for ill children and expectant mothers in the Inland Northwest. He served as director for the local Poison Control Center and on the clinical faculty of the department of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr. Allen helped to start and served as medical director for the Healing the Children, an international medical aid organization. He spent volunteer time caring for children in Guatemala, Romania, Ethiopia, Colombia, Korea and St. Kitts, among others.

He served as president and was a member of the Spokane Archeological Society. He also was a member of the Spokane Rotary Club, Spokane Club, Spokane Racquet Club and Manito Golf and Country Club.

In 1985 he was honored with the Spokane Physician Citizen of the Year Award. That same year he was given the Humanitarian Award signed by President Ronald Reagan.

Dr. Allen was a supporter of the Spokane Symphony and at age 55 pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot by receiving his pilot’s license.

Survivors include his wife, Susan; three daughters, Cindy Whiteside of Bellevue, Laura Hauser of Seattle and Wendy Kaehler of Renton, Wash.; his mother, Bernice; and three grandchildren.

Frank Keller Canby, Ore.

Funeral Mass for Frank Keller, a former 48-year Spokane resident, will be at 9 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Keller, who was born in Dobroschanowa, Ukraine, died Thursday. He was 92.

He worked as a machinist in Spokane.

Mr. Keller moved to Canby in February.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the German Club of Spokane.

His wife, Rosa, died in 1993.

Survivors include three nieces and four nephews.

Zella Hubbard Colfax, Wash.

Service for Zella T. Hubbard, 87, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home in Dayton, Wash. Burial will follow at Dayton Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hubbard, who was born in Long Creek, Ore., died Friday.

She moved to Dayton as a child, and attended schools there.

She married Rodney Hubbard in 1930, and they moved to Nezperce, Idaho. In 1947 they moved to LaCrosse, Wash., where they farmed for many years until moving to St. John, Wash., in 1980. In 1990 she moved to the Whitman Health and Rehabilitation Center in Colfax.

Her husband died in 1990.

Survivors include two sons, David Hubbard of St. John and Ken Hubbard of Yuma, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Wilma Staples Newport, Wash.

Service for Wilma Jeane Staples, 68, will be at 3 p.m. today at New Testament Church of Newport. Burial will follow at Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Staples, who was born in Meek, Neb., died Thursday.

She graduated from high school in Nebraska and later taught school.

In 1950 she married Charles Staples. They moved to Newport in 1953.

Mrs. Staples worked at Pennel’s Mink Farm and later as an attendant for the G and O Laundromat.

She was a member of New Testament Church and was a fifth degree team member for the Noble Grange.

Her husband died in 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Wayne, Larry and Ted Staples, all of Newport; three sisters, LaDona Whettham of Gillette, Wyo., Dorothy Lederer of Norfolk, Neb., and Pamela Tikalsky of Spencer, Neb.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ida Butts Spokane

Service for Ida Butts, a 58-year Spokane resident, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Born in Logan County, N.D., Mrs. Butts died Thursday. She was 94. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Archie, died in 1976.

Survivors include two daughters, Velma Dinehart and Phyllis Gilliland, both of Spokane; a son, Wallace Butts of Seattle; a sister, Bertha Stickel of Spokane; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Lois Harris Spokane

Memorial service for Lois Harris, 68, was Saturday at Camp Lutherhaven on Mica Bay, Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Harris, who was born in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, died Thursday. She was a 25-year Spokane resident.

She worked as a program analyst for District 81.

Survivors include her husband, Eric; and a son, Bill Harris of Spokane.

Lois MacNaughton Spokane

No service will be held for Lois Don MacNaughton, 89, at her request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss MacNaughton, who was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, died Saturday.

She moved to Spokane in 1925 and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. She attended Eastern Washington State College, working toward a degree in education.

Miss MacNaughton began her teaching career in Keller, Wash., in 1934, and later taught in the Washington cities of Coulee, Beaver, and Manson, before teaching for School District 81 in Spokane. She retired from District 81 in 1973 after 39 years.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma educational sorority, Eastern Washington University Lifetime Alumni, Washington State and Spokane Retired Teachers associations, Corbin Park Center and the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include a brother, Donald MacNaughton of Spokane; three nieces, Sharon Christenson of Silverdale, Wash., and Joan Fisher and Linda MacNaughton, both of Spokane; and two nephews, Donald Christenson of Spokane and Thomas MacNaughton of Florida.

Esther Spuler Hauser Lake, Idaho

Visitation for Esther Ann Spuler, 70, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Spuler, who was born in Rathdrum, died Saturday.

She graduated from Rathdrum High School in 1948 and then from the Coeur d’Alene Lake School of Beauty.

Mrs. Spuler was a 50-year Hauser Lake resident and served on the Hauser Lake election board precinct for many years.

She was also a member of the Hauseretts Womens Club and volunteered with the Hauser Lake Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary.

She was active in swimming and dancing and spent winters in Quartzsite, Ariz., for the last 15 years.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Frank; a son, Gary Spuler, and a daughter, Carol Ann Spuler, both of Hauser Lake; a sister Norma Hockinson of Eugene, Ore.; and one granddaughter.

David `Bob’ Graham Spokane

Service for David R. “Bob” Graham, 76, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Graham, a 41-year Spokane resident., died Friday. He was born in Newport, Wash.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as an aircraft mechanic, and later worked as a heavy-equipment mechanic and welder for many years. He retired in 1988.

Mr. Graham was a longtime member of the Lakeside Masonic Lodge No. 42 in Sandpoint.

Survivors include his wife, Bea; two daughters, Connie Graham of Redmond, Wash., and Rosalie Kimbrell of Kingman, Ariz.; two sons, Michael Graham of Spokane and Kevin Graham of Mercer Island, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Spokane.

Louis Dassow Spokane

Private service for Louis E. Dassow, 84, will be held at a later date. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dassow, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He was a well-known mechanic in Spokane and was a founder of the Independent Auto Association of Spokane.

Mr. Dassow also owned and operated Western Hydraulic Auto Service and Lou’s Cars.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Emma; two sons, Gerald and Ronald Dassow, both of Spokane; two daughters, Randi Sharp and Sharlee Dahl, both of Spokane; 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Betty Daily Potlatch, Idaho

Visitation for Betty J. Daily will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash. Service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Potlatch Community Presbyterian Church. Private burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse.

Mrs. Daily, who was born in Garfield, Wash., died Thursday. She was 82.

She was adopted in 1927 and attended school in Palouse. After graduating in 1935 from Palouse High School she received an education degree from Lewiston Normal School.

Mrs. Daily began teaching at East Cove Country School, east of Palouse. She would later serve as a substitute teacher for the Potlatch, Palouse, and Garfield school districts.

In 1937 she married Robert Daily. They lived in Egypt for six months and also went on photo safaris to Israel and Kenya.

She would often sing at funeral services in the area around Palouse.

Mrs. Daily was a member of the Palouse Christian Church, the Potlatch Presbyterian Church, the Palouse/Garfield American Association of University Women, Will Do Club, Round Table of Palouse, and Daughters of the Nile Malalac Temple No. 55 in Lewiston. She also was a 64-year member of the Kennedy Ford Grange.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Donna Harvill of University Place, Wash.; a son, Dennis Daily of Redondo Beach, Calif.; four half-sisters, Virginia Cooper of Ardenvoir, Wash., Kathy Adkins of Seattle, Phyllis Anderson of the Tri-Cities, and Donna Hayworth of Belfair, Wash.; a halfbrother, Jess Wise of Springfield, Ore.; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Potlatch Ambulance Fund or to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
