Silver Anniversary Bloomsday Considers Long-Sleeved T-Shirts, An Honor For Never Missing

The streets are cleared of water cups. The trees are freed of runners’ discarded clothing.

And that means just one thing - it’s time to get ready for Bloomsday 2001.

Race organizers say they expect more participants next year.

This year, Bloomsday registrants totaled 50,401, with 45,523 people finishing the race.

Lilac Bloomsday Association President Steven Jones said board members already are planning for the 25th anniversary of the 12-kilometer run.

“We want to do something special,” he said. “We want to make it different - to make people want to run it.”

Ideas that have been tossed around include a long-sleeved T-shirt for finishers and something special for people who have participated in every Bloomsday.

“Maybe we’ll have a special starting area or a jacket or something,” he said.

But Jones said the organization is only considering ideas now.

Bloomsday will be May 6 next year. The early forecast calls for sunny skies.
