Lewis-Clark State College relief pitcher Wes Hutchison worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the ninth inning to preserve a 5-4 non-league baseball victory over Washington State Wednesday night at Harris Field in Lewiston.

The Warriors, 52-11 and ranked No. 1 among NAIA schools, won their 10th straight game. The Cougars (16-33) extended their losing streak to eight after their third one-run loss in four games.

Hutchison was the victim of two errors in the top of the ninth by shortstop Elliot Strankman. But he struck out WSU’s leadng hitter, Ray Hattenburg, then induced Steve Curran to ground into a game-ending double play.

The Cougars received 2-for-3 hitting performances from Jon Baeder and Curran. Ray Falkenborg hit a solo homer in the first inning.

The University of Washington scored in each of the last five innings to erase a pair of four-run deficits and defeat University of Portland 10-7 in a non-conference game in Seattle. The Huskies (25-23) have won 11 of their last 14 games and seven in a row at home.

Softball

Top-ranked Washington stopped No. 3 UCLA 4-0 in Los Angeles. The Huskies, 55-6 overall, improved to 15-3 in the Pac-10. The Bruins fell to 36-11-1 and 11-7.

Basketball

Eastern Washington University senior Ryan Hansen is one of six Division I men’s basketball players to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award.

Hansen, who received a $5,000 grant from the NCAA, will earn his physical education degree this spring. He plans to begin working on his master’s degree - possibly in sports administration - in 2001.

Hansen, a first-team All-Big Sky selection last season, led the Eagles in scoring with 12.4 points per game.

Rowing

The WSU women held down the 16th spot in the national coaches’ poll for the fourth consecutive week.

Washington is ranked No. 1, while Pac-10 teams California (No. 5) Southern Cal (No. 12) and Oregon State (No. 15) are also in the Top 20.
