Orville Rees Spokane

Graveside memorial service for Orville Wesley Rees, 70, will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Pines Cemetery in Spokane. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rees, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.

He grew up and attended schools in the Spokane Valley and later owned Northwest Mono-roof in Spokane for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Delores; three sons, James Rees of Newman Lake, Rick Rees of Tigard, Ore., and Keith Rees of Otis Orchards, Wash.; two daughters, Kathy Meneely of Kennewick and Yvonne Stevens of Newman Lake; a stepson, John Wall of Warden, Wash.; three stepdaughters, Trina Wall of Warden, and Jewel Moore and Kendel Repass, both of Spokane; a brother, Buel Rees of Spokane; two sisters, Fern Kreiger and Carol Wendt, both of Spokane; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Jessica (Plourd) DeBoer Mesa, Ariz.

Funeral Mass for Jessica “Jessie” (Plourd) DeBoer, 76, was held Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Graveside service followed at Mountain View Park in Colville, Wash. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. DeBoer, who was born and raised in Tampa, Fla., died May 3.

She graduated from high school in Tampa. She later married Lawrence Plourd in 1944 and traveled across the United States with him. He was in the Air Force. They later moved to Spokane, where she lived for 15 years.

Mrs. DeBoer was a homemaker.

She later moved to Colville where she was a 10-year resident.

In 1993 she married Jack DeBoer, and they moved to Mesa, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her first husband.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Inez Bell of Spokane and Shirley Holt of Kennewick; three sons, Mitchel Plourd of Colville, Wallace Plourd of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Tim Plourd of Yakima; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Saburo Maruyama Spokane

Memorial service for Saburo W. Maruyama, 78, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Ball and DoddSouth Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Maruyama, who was born in Medford, Ore., died Sunday. He was a 55-year resident of Spokane.

He graduated from high school in Medford.

Mr. Maruyama was a millwright for Spokane Casket Co. until he retired in 1980.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Tillie; two daughters, Julie Hanson of Troutdale, Ore., and Terri Stromberg of Medford; a son, Larry Maruyama of Boise; a sister, Teruko Maruyama of Spokane; two brothers, Kazuo and Yoshio Maruyama, both of Spokane; two grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Ruth Bruce Hayden, Idaho

Service for Ruth E. Bruce, 88, will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel, with burial to follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow at the Leisure Park Retirement Community Club House on Prairie Avenue and Atlas Road.

Mrs. Bruce, who was born in the Cedar Creek Disrict of Idaho’s Latah County, died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Garfield, Wash., in 1928 and married Robert “Ted” Bruce in 1929.

The couple lived in Washington and settled on a farm near Tekoa, Wash., and raised their family along with wheat, pea, and lentils.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years and then moved to Hayden in the 1980s, where she was the official hostess at her daughter’s Ski Shack specialty store.

Survivors include four daughters, Jeanne Bowman and Mary St. Louis, both of Seattle, Carolyn Lyden of Hayden and Colleen McCracken of Spokane; 19 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Winifred Ewell Spokane

Memorial service for Winifred L. Ewell, 83, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riverview Terrace. A second memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at First Covenant Church. Ball and DoddSouth Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ewell, who was born in Minot, N.D., died Monday.

She graduated from high school in Minot, N.D.

Mrs. Ewell was a prominent book reviewer in Spokane for the last 30 years.

She was a member of First Covenant Church and Spokane Sorosis Club for Women. She was also a past member of the Women’s Book Club.

Her husband, Alfred, died in 1998. Survivors include a son, James Ewell of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter Sharon Williams, a brother, Hugh Stromswold, and a sister, Katherine Blom, all of Spokane; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Carl Larson Spokane

Visitation for Carl Griffin Larson, 81, will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church. Mr. Larson, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Monday.

He was a graduate of North Central High School.

Mr. Larson served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was stationed in the South Pacific.

He was a manager at the Kaiser Aluminum Mead plant for 30 years. He retired in 1978.

Mr. Larson was a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Spokane.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lorraine; a daughter, Robin Alexander of Spokane; a son, Carl Larson Jr. of Spokane; a sister, Rhea Cove of Tacoma; and four grandchildren.

Frank Sigman Spokane

Service for Frank B. Sigman, 82, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Sigman, who was born in Lewiston, died Saturday.

He graduated from high school in Great Falls, Mont. He later attended the University of Montana.

He and his father owned and operated the Sigman Food Stores chain throughout Washington and Idaho.

He joined the Navy and served during World War II on the USS Tennessee and the USS Valeria.

After his military discharge, Mr. Sigman and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Spokane in 1946. He worked for the Washington State Liquor Control Board for 20 years.

Mr. Sigman was a past master and member of the Tyrian Lodge No. 96, which is now called the Spokane Lodge No. 34. He was also a member of the Spokane Council No. 4, Royal Select Masters Spokane Chapter No. 2, Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite Valley of Spokane, Grand Commandery of Knights Templar Cataract No. 3, El Katif Shrine Temple, Royal Arch Masons Children’s Heart Foundation, Knights Templar Eye Foundation, and the Order of Eastern Star Spokane Chapter 163. He was a charter member of the North Hill Shrine Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janis Sigman of Olympia; and a son, Gary Sigman of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children or The Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders.

Vance Traut Spokane

Service for Vance E. Traut, 77, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Traut, who was born in Harvard, Neb., died May 8.

He worked as an inspector and appraiser for the Federal Housing Agency for 20 years. He retired in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Martello of Spokane; a half-brother, Jack Traut, and a half-sister, Cheri Bales, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one grandchild.

Margaret Warren Spokane Service for Margaret A. Warren, 98, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Cedonia (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mrs. Warren, who was born in Hunters, Wash., died Friday.

She worked as a seamstress and retail salesperson for various clothing stores in the Spokane area.

Survivors include two sons, Jim and Robert Warren, both of Reno, Nev.; two brothers, Roy and David Overmier; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

Jeffrey Stroupe Spokane

Private service for Jeffrey P. Stroupe, 44, will be held at a later date. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stroupe, who was born in Nebraska City, Neb., died Saturday. He was a 16-year resident of Spokane.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1968 and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School. He later moved to Spokane with his immediate family and attended Spokane Community College.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; a daughter, Ryan Stroupe, and a son, Jody Stroupe, both of Spokane; his mother, Mykkel Wallace of Coeur d’Alene; his father, Kenneth Stroupe of Maywood, Neb.; a sister, Venessa Anstine of Post Falls; and a grandson.

Ethel `Lois’ Harris Spokane

Memorial service for Ethel “Lois” Harris was held Saturday at Camp Lutherhaven on Mica Bay at Lake Coeur d’Alene. Neptune Society of Washington was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harris, who was born in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, died May 4. She was 68.

She graduated as salutatorian from Jenkins High School in Chewelah, Wash., in 1950. Later that year she married David Harris. They divorced 12 years later.

Mrs. Harris continued her education at Spokane Community College where she earned her associate degree in applied science in 1965.

She began her career in computer technology at the Spokane School District.

In 1972 she moved to Pocatello, Idaho, and later to Houston. She returned to Spokane in 1982.

Mrs. Harris retired from Kaiser Aluminum in 1988.

She volunteered at Heifer Projects International near Little Rock, Ark.

Survivors include six sons, William Harris of Spokane, Richard Harris of Talent, Ore., Samuel Harris of West Hollywood, Calif., Daniel Harris of Palmdale, Calif., James Harris of Claremore, Okla., and Glen Harris of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Constance Bradshaw of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; a foster son, Ken Pillers of Newport, Wash.; two brothers, Richard Helm of Spokane and Douglas Helm of Deer Park; two sisters, JoAnHertlein of Clayton, Wash. and Mary Jane Helm of Clarkston, Wash.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Jeanne Heidke Spokane

No service for Jeanne K. Heidke, 76, will be held at her request. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements Mrs. Heidke, who was born and raised in Irwin, Iowa, died Sunday. She was a 47-year resident of Spokane.

She was an X-ray technician at the Sacred Heart Medical Building and later at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center before retiring in 1988.

Mrs. Heidke was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and the Altar Guild.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, William; a daughter, Elizabeth Heidke of Kent, Wash.; a son, Alan Heidke of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Eleanor Hurt Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Eleanor Hunt, 77, at the family’s request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hurt, a longtime Coeur d’Alene resident, died Tuesday.

She was born in Ellsworth, Mich., and in 1930 moved to Coeur d’Alene, where she grew up and attended schools.

She married Alfred Hurt in 1950 and was a homemaker and participated in gardening and music activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Gearheart; a son, Randy Hurt; and six grandchildren.
