Three days after losing to Lake City, the Lewiston Bengals wasted no time getting their revenge.
The Bengals scored 10 runs in the first inning and routed the visiting Timberwolves 13-1 in the A-1 Region I baseball tournament Friday.
No. 2-seeded Lewiston (20-5) will visit No. 1 Coeur d’Alene (20-5) today at 11. The Vikings can capture the title with a victory. Lewiston would need two wins over CdA to take the crown.
Lake City, which toppled Lewiston 12-5 on Tuesday, finished the year 11-16.
Derek Bruce’s three-run homer in the first and Dustin Zager’s bases-loaded triple in the second pushed the Bengals on top 13-0. The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Jake Lenz had two of LC’s five hits.
St. Maries took the dramatic route to qualify for the State A-2 baseball tournament.
The Lumberjacks escaped a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to edge Orofino 3-2 Friday in a playoff game to determine District I-II’s second state berth. Lakeland previously claimed the district championship.
The Lumberjacks (22-3) scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be huge. Josh Larsen’s single gave St. Maries a 3-1 lead.
Orofino’s Seth Danielson homered to lead off the seventh. The Maniacs (11-15) eventually loaded the bases. With two outs and the count full, reliever Trent Duffey retired Nick Manfull on a grounder to second base.
Eric Church of Wallace struck out 10, but it wasn’t enough as Timberline earned a berth to the State A-3 tournament with an 8-6 win over the Miners in the District I-II playoff game at North Idaho College. Timberline’s Pat Christopherson was 2 for 3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs.
