Ponderay Wal-Mart Expanding

From Staff

Wal-Mart will expand it’s store here, adding 125 jobs.

Construction will begin this summer on a 57,000-square-foot addition that will turn the store into a Wal-Mart “supercenter.”

The expansion will add a full-line grocery department to the store’s 36 existing departments, said Amy Hill, director of community affairs in Reno, Nev.

Wal-Mart will continue to operate during the construction, which should be completed by March 2001.

Wal-Mart opened the 100,000-square-foot Ponderay store in 1996. The store, north of Sandpoint on Highway 95, currently employs about 200 full- and part-time workers.

The one-stop shopping concept of Wal-Mart supercenters has been successful in other markets, Hill said. “We designed it with having everything under one roof.”

The Arkansas-based retailer opens or remodels 200 stores each year, she said.

Wal-Mart also has stores in Spokane, Colville, Moscow and Lewiston.
