Services will be today for John Pengilly, the founder and co-owner of one of downtown Boise’s best-known taverns, Pengilly’s Saloon.

Pengilly died Tuesday at a local care center. He was 77.

After spending 11 years in the lumber business in Halfway, Ore., Pengilly and his wife, Faye, moved to Boise and built the Downtowner Motel in 1959. Seventeen years later, they sold the motel and established Pengilly’s Saloon with their son, Pete.
