Canoe Found In River; Man Reports Pair Tossed

Spokane sheriff’s marine deputies salvaged a red canoe from the Spokane River on Tuesday evening. A man later reported he and his son escaped the overturned boat.

A person called 911 after seeing an empty canoe on the river at Trent and Pines, Sheriff’s Cpl. Dave Reagan said. Marine deputies found the canoe near the Argonne Bridge in Millwood, where they secured it to the shore, he said.

At 7:30 p.m., the owner of the canoe called the sheriff’s office to report that he and his adult son had spilled out of the canoe but had made it to shore, despite high currents. Deputies were interviewing the man Tuesday night, Reagan said.

Next week is National Safe Boating Week. Authorities warn that despite the nice weather, the Spokane River is running too fast for canoes and other small craft.

Spokane County and other nearby jurisdictions have already seen numerous boating and near-drowning incidents this year, Reagan said. Authorities hope to use the week to educate and caution waterway users before the boating season gets into full swing.
