Markets End Week Down
Stocks ended a quiet, fitful session with narrow losses Friday as investors, unconsoled by new signs of a slowing economy, focused instead on the prospect of higher interest rates.
Every market average bobbed between gains and losses as investors proved reluctant to take on any significant new positions in advance of the three-day weekend for Memorial Day. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market both had their slowest sessions of the year.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 24.68 to 10,299.24. For the week, the blue-chip index fell 327.61 points.
The Nasdaq composite index slipped 0.24 to 3,205.11. It fell 185.29 points during the week.
