Widman 2Nd In D-Ii Heptathlon

Laura Widman of Seattle Pacific finished second in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division II track and field championships in Raleigh, N.C.

Widman, a sophomore from Colfax, finished with 5,377 points. Her efforts in the long jump, javelin and 800 helped her move past Meredith Davis of Morningside College.

First-day leader Kim Schiemenz of Northern Colorado was the winner, with 5,602 points.

Lewis and Clark graduate Sarah Hiss, competing for Western Washington, placed 12th in the event. Hiss, a senior, was hampered by an ankle injury and scored 4,042.

Mead’s Leah Merrell, competing for Eastern Oregon, placed third in the women’s hammer throw during Thursday’s action at the NAIA meet in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Merrell’s 164-11 trailed Wykeisha Thompson of Wayland Baptist (167-3) and April Kockrow of Doane (165-7).

Nicole Irons of Southern Oregon, a Post Falls graduate, placed sixth in the women’s pole vault at 11-7-3/4.

East Valley graduate Korinda Godwin, competing for Northwest College, ran 4:52.3 in the women’s 1,500 to place ninth in her preliminary.

Softball

Community Colleges of Spokane placed five players on the Northeast Region’s all-conference team.

On the list are Kylee Curry, most valuable pitcher; Jenny Lytle, center field; Kris Rozett, right field; Crystal Perry, shortstop; and Sanoi Sao, second base. Rebecca Triplett made the second team as a utility player.

Women’s rowing

Washington’s varsity 8 and varsity 4 won their heats as the NCAA championships began on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J.

The Huskies varsity 8 is undefeated and ranked No. 2. UW’s varsity 4 is the defending champion.

The varsity 8 advanced to today’s semifinals. The varsity 4 moved directly into Sunday’s finals.
