Johnson Brothers Win; Gorillas Champs

Brothers Karl and Peter Johnson of Lewis and Clark won the State 4A boys doubles tennis championship on Saturday at Tri-City Court Club in Kennewick.

The Johnsons defeated Martin Uylangco and Ryan Parsons of Wenatchee 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the final. The Johnsons also defeated Uylangco/ Parsons at last weekend’s regional tournament, but that match was for third place.

Karl Johnson is a senior, Peter a junior.

The Johnsons led LC to a tie for second place in team scoring, with 10 points. Cascade (Everett) scored 11.

Ferris, with eight points, tied for sixth place. James VanHess and Kevin Novan scored the points for Ferris by placing third in boys doubles. VanHess/Novan lost to the Johnsons 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 in a morning semifinal.

Also at the tournament, Gonzaga Prep’s Marie Carroll and Marissa Flinders placed second in girls doubles by dropping a 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 match to a team from Decatur. Carroll/Flinders advanced to the championship by outlasting Kimberly Scholz and Ali Mathieu of Davis 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the semifinals. Carroll/Flinders placed third at last week’s regional. Their state effort led G-Prep to second place, with 11 points. Champion Inglemoor scored 12… . Shadle Park brought home a pair of third-place finishes. Philip Laubscher of the Highlanders defeated Kamiakin’s Luke Roloff 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the boys singles match for third/fifth places. Laubscher lost to Decatur’s Nick Moxley 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. In girls doubles, Shadle’s Lisa Trefts and Leslie Liddell defeated Scholz/Mathieu of Davis 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the match for third/fifth places. Trefts/Liddell helped Shadle tie for sixth place, with eight points.

A pair of top-six places led Davenport’s girls to the team championship at the State 1A/B tournament at Yakima Tennis Club. Ashley Paul led the way, defeating Julie Schuetz of Columbia-Burbank 6-3, 6-0 in the girls singles match for fourth and sixth places. Kristy Guhlke and Natalie Rux placed sixth for the Gorillas, losing to Overlake’s Hilary Whittington and Elena Kliouf 6-3, 6-3 in their final match. Davenport scored 12 points to hold off Bush and Annie Wright, who tied for second with 10.

Pullman’s Mychaelanne Niemann placed sixth in girls singles at the State 2A tournament at Yakima Tennis Club. Holly Clevenger of Cascade (Leavenworth) defeated Niemann 7-5, 6-2 in the match for fourth and sixth places.

Baseball

Touchet defeated Curlew 8-5 in the third-place game of the State B tournament at Yakima Valley College.

Touchet finished 22-5, Curlew 19-11.

DeSales (24-1) won its eighth title in nine years, and ninth in 12 years, by edging Mossyrock 4-3 at Yakima County Stadium. The Irish missed a perfect season by losing to Touchet during the Blue Mountain League season.
