Ccs Runner-Up At Bellevue Crossover
The Community Colleges of Spokane finished second at the Bellevue Crossover Tournament after losing Saturday to Linn-Benton Community College 15-13, 13-15, 15-11, 15-12 in the championship game.
Spokane’s Amber Carter led the team with 14 digs and two aces in the title game. Marlo Urdahl had 16 kills.
CCS (29-20) defeated Green River in four games earlier in the day, for the right to play Linn-Benton, and was led by Beth Vercic’s 21 kills and seven aces by Carter.
CCS was 3-1 in the two-day tournament.
Gonzaga University dropped its 16th straight contest, losing to visiting Saint Mary’s in four games. The loss marked the only time in GU history that the team didn’t win a West Coast Conference game.
The Bulldogs (4-12, 0-11 WCC) came back after being down 14-8 to take the first match 16-14.
UC Santa Barbara, led by Simone Kuhn’s 11 kills defeated Idaho in three straight games. The Vandals’ Regan Bulter and Anna-Marie Hammond had seven kills apiece.
Whitworth toppled George Fox University in four games, led by four Pirates with 10 or more kills.
Kristen Turner led Whitworth (17-8, 12-4 NWC) with 18 kills followed by Abby Jo Hornstein and Lindsey Wagstaff with 13 apiece. Jennifer Westerberg led the Bruins (7-15, 5-11) with 12 kills.
Northern Arizona defeated host Eastern Washington University in three games. Northern Arizona’s Maggie Barrera and Xylena Sanders each had 12 kills. EWU’s Tamara Van Engelen finished with 13 kills. Janelle Ruen had 13 digs.
Men’s soccer
Led by Eric Johnson’s goal and assist, the Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Peninsula College 4-2. Peninsula’s Jaime Mendenhall opened the scoring 3 minutes into the game, but CCS scored the next four goals putting the game out of reach.
Ross Good scored the game-winning goal 10 minutes into the second half as the Whitman Missionaries defeated the visiting Whitworth Pirates 2-1.
Whitworth’s Paul Johnson tied the game on a 12-yard penalty kick in the first half.
Women’s soccer
Chrissy Walsh had three goals and Tiffany Holtz added a goal and two assists as host North Idaho stopped Wenatchee Valley 5-0.
Walsh’s first goal came just 3 minutes into the game. She scored again 18 minutes later and then opened the scoring in the second half at 60:00.
Swimming
The Washington State women’s team defeated San Jose State 176-85 in Pullman. Among the winners was freshman Taryn Ternent who won the 100 backstroke in 58.19 seconds, placing her third on the Cougars’ all-time list.
Rachel Dong won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.97), placed second in the 100 butterfly (57.83) and led the 200 medley team to victory (1:48.38).
Whitworth College’s combined men’s and women’s team finished second to Simon Fraser University 148-98, at the Puget Sound Relays in Tacoma.
Cross country
North Idaho’s Charlie Miller finished eighth at 26:50 as the Cardinals men placed third with a score of 67, at Northern Pines GC in Bigfork, Mont. Ricks College won the meet with 23 points.
Ricks College also won the women’s meet with 21 points. NIC’s women finished third with 85 points.
Wrestling
North Idaho won its second straight match by defeating Highline CC 33-13. NIC got pins from 184-pounder Josh Birt, 125-pounder Ale De La Pena and 149-pounder Matt Owen.
The Cardinals (2-0) defeated Pacific Lutheran 36-6 Friday.
Baseball
North Idaho’s Casey Holbeck pitched three innings, striking out four and giving up one run as the North tied the South 3-3 in an All-Star game in St. George, Utah.
In the second game of the day the North defeated the South 12-2.
