Once found only in exotic products such as spy planes and space probes, titanium has become the stuff of a range of goods, from batteries to golf clubs.

The metal owes its popularity to having a strength-to-weight ratio that is far better than steel and aluminum.

Things made from it will be less likely to get dented and are easier to carry.

* Jumping for joy: Jumptech.com’s vision of the future includes consumers festooned with tiny barcode scanners attached to their keychains or built into their pens.

The gizmos are designed to read so-called “JumpCodes” in newspapers and magazines, eliminating the need to rip Web site addresses, known as universal resource locators or URLs, out of periodicals or scribble them on scraps of paper.

Once captured in the scanner’s memory, the information can be transferred to a computer, providing a link to specific Web sites.
