Area Students Earn Whitman Diplomas

The following Inland Northwest residents recently graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla with bachelor’s degrees:

Marissa Sprank, Veradale, is the daughter of Lisa Klapp, Liberty Lake, and John Sprank, Woodland Park, Colo. She is a 1996 graduate of Central Valley High School. She majored in biology and graduated cum laude.

Megan Neal, Veradale, is the daughter of Carl and Nanette Neal. She is an English major and graduated from Central Valley High School in 1996.

Marty Parsons, Davenport, Wash., majored in economics. He is the son of Daryl and Jean Parsons and is a 1996 graduate of Davenport High School.

Timothy Allen, Spokane, is a chemistry major. He is the son of Edward and Katherine Allen. He graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory School in 1996.

Tiffany Meyers, Spokane, majored in English and theater and graduated cum laude. She is the daughter of Roger and Linda Meyers and is a 1996 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School.

Heather Schwagerl, Spokane, is a psychology major and the daughter of Laurie Schwagerl, Spokane, and Gregory Schwagerl, Puyallup, Wash. She graduated from Ferris High School in 1996.

Amy Fong, Spokane, is a chemistry/biology major. She is the daughter of Katherine Fong and Stan Fong, both of Spokane. She is a 1996 graduate of Mead High School and plans to pursue a medical degree.

Leslie Whitten, Spokane, majored in economics and is the daughter of Terence and Marjorie Whitten. She graduated from University High School in 1996.

Patrick McManus, professor emeritus at Eastern Washington University and well-known writer of outdoor humor, will be profiled in the 2001 edition of “Who’s Who in America.” He is the author of 14 books, four stage plays and writes free-lance for Reader’s Digest, Sports Illustrated, TV Guide and many other publications.

His latest book, “The Deer on A Bicycle: Excursions into the Writing of Humor,” was published this spring by the EWU Press. McManus has donated the proceeds from the sale of the book to support scholarships in creative writing and journalism at Eastern. He has been listed in “Who’s Who in America since 1996.

Two Native American students from Spokane Community College, have received 2000 Gates Millennium Scholarships for the upcoming school year.

Shawn Brigman, a member of the Spokane Tribe, graduated at the end of the summer quarter with an associate of arts degree. He planned to attend Washington State University, majoring in architecture.

Richard Whitney, a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes, has two associate in applied science degrees from SCC, one in natural resources/parks and recreation and the other in natural resources/ wildlife. He received an associate of applied science degree in natural resources/forestry in June.
