‘Ladies Man’ Boring, Unfunny

Tyler Wilson, Coeur D'Alene Hig

Every single year “Saturday Night Live” comes up with some comedy about one of their skits. Some were good (Wayne’s World, Coneheads), some were bad (Superstar, Night at the Roxbury). Unfortunately, “The Ladies Man” is a new addition to the increasingly long list of bad SNL movies.

It’s not that the skit, which stars Tim Meadows, isn’t funny. In fact, it was one of the highlights of the fledgling TV show. But the “Ladies Man” movie is just overextended, sadly long, and at times downright boring.

The first half-hour or so is funny, but once the film establishes that it doesn’t contain much more material than the skit, it runs into trouble.

Meadows is a humorous comedian, but can’t carry an entire film full of unfunny lines. Even the normally hilarious Will Ferrell is subdued in a - not to use such a harsh word - dumb appearance as an angry, singing wrestler. Most unfortunate is that this character is the most entertaining supporting role in the entire film.

It’s obvious that SNL movies get an awful lot of bad press, which at times seems a little hasty. But “The Ladies Man” is so unfunny beyond the first 20 minutes that it deserves all the bad talk it gets. Tim Meadows has a lot going for him in his career beyond his days at SNL. Just not this movie.
