Spokane Could Be Hot Spot For Winter Whiners

The Slice has grumbled in the past about winter whiners.

You know, people who grouse about snow and cold even though they live in a place where both are inevitable.

But here’s a thought. What if, instead of skiing or snowboarding, complaining about winter is actually this area’s favorite seasonal sport?

Maybe groaning about freezing temperatures shouldn’t be cause for annoyance. Maybe it should be viewed as a form of recreation.

And who are we to put a crimp in people’s fun?

* Eleven for Tuesday: 1. Having lots of flashlights won’t keep bad things from happening.

2. It’s hard to find a simple, basic radio these days.

3. Stuffed animals didn’t used to be gigantic.

4. Parents who don’t know their kids smoke aren’t paying attention.

5. If every business had a mascot (someone wearing a zany costume), what would the character’s theme be at your workplace?

6. Not having a consistent home for the remote is one way to reduce the amount of TV your family watches.

7. What was your parents’ craziest home-remedy for a minor malady?

8. Scam alert: A guy goes into medical waiting rooms and says, “My wife forgot her coat.” Then he steals one and exits to search it for a wallet or car keys.

9. Taupe is not one of the air quality wood-burning code colors.

10. How long does it usually take to go from first-date manners to belching and worse?

11. Nobody starts out life as a criminal loser. It has to be learned.

* Slice answers: Dani Lord-Flynn would call the Spokane Valley “Superficial Valley.”

Nicole Pollock suggested “Mini-Mall Valley.”

And a reader said one good thing to say to the parents of a critically ill child is “My kids are having a sleep-over, and they’d really like it if (name of the sick child) could come.”

* Multiple choice: How do you explain the incredibly close vote in the seemingly simple matter of eliminating masculine language from the Spokane city charter?

a.) Some sort of impotent backlash.

b.) People thought they were voting for Al Gore.

c.) Thousands of Spokane voters want women to know their place.

d.) Comic example of white male rage.

e.) Voters feared charter would be made to sound girly.

* Today’s Slice question: When was the last time you purchased something that wasn’t made in Asia?
