Eastern Has Shot At Title

Jennifer Gabel had 12 kills with just one error and finished with a .579 attack percentage to propel the Eastern Washington Eagles to a 15-10, 17-15, 15-4 semifinal victory over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in the Big Sky Conference women’s volleyball tournament in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday.

Robyn Sonju-Felder and Angie Hall each added 11 kills as EWU (18-9) advanced to the championship game against Sacramento State tonight at 7. Sac State gained the title match by taking a five-game thriller over Montana State.

Eastern and Sac State split a pair of matches during the season, with each team winning on its home floor.

Janelle Ruen and Hall had 12 digs apiece for the Eagles and Jessie Wright and Courtney Bush combined for 43 assists. Chelsea Robb paced NAU (17-6) with 11 kills and 10 digs.

Heather Kniss had 24 kills and a game-high 27 digs and Jenny Kniss tallied a game-high 26 kills to go along with 18 digs as the Idaho Vandals rolled to a 15-12, 18-16, 11-15, 15-10 win over Boise State in a Big West Conference match in Moscow.

The Vandals (14-12, 5-10) also got 19 kills and 21 digs from Regan Butler, 15 kills from Anna-Marie Hammond and an 83-assist effort from Jenny Neville en route to the victory.

Tara Brinkerhoff had a team-high 24 kills for the Broncos (7-19, 3-13).

Women’s basketball

Angie Gorton scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures and the Colorado State Rams cruised to a 71-60 win over Idaho in a regular-season opener at the Nevada Tournament in Reno.

Darci Pemberton hit 7 of 19 shots from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and finished with a game-high 18 points for the Vandals. She also led all rebounders with 13.

Amanda Edlund scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Erin Torpey added 12 points and 10 boards to lead the North Idaho Cardinals to a 68-65 overtime win over the Treasure Valley Chukars at the Ricks Invitational in Rexburg, Idaho.

Tara Jones hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer ending overtime, giving the Indiana Hoosiers a 77-74 victory over the Washington Huskies at Bloomington, Ind., in Kathi Bennett’s debut as the Hoosiers’ coach.

Men’s soccer

Washington edged Alabama-Birmingham 1-0 in four overtimes in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Seattle. No other details were available.

College wrestling

The North Idaho Cardinals used four falls and a technical fall to rout the Southwestern Oregon Lakers 50-0 in Coos Bay, Ore.
