The local Boys and Girls Club has launched a program to give kids of all ages a safe and nurturing place to be after 2:30 p.m. The three-hour program is looser than school, but is still structured and focuses on education. About 25 kids attend daily at McFarland Junior High.

Ephrata
The city will privatize garbage collection, saying it will be cheaper for consumers. Consolidated Disposal Services of Ephrata has the 10-year contract.
Lincoln County

The town will hold its annual Moonlight Madness Sale in conjunction with its Christmas lighting ceremony Friday night at 5:30 p.m. Free hot cider and doughnuts will treat visitors as Santa arrives in a horse-drawn wagon.

The volunteers with First Book collect and distribute books to children who can’t afford them. The group also recently held a book-ordering party. The Corrective Readers Class at Sadie Halstead Middle School will receive a plethora of books thanks to First Book and a grant from the Sandpoint Wal-Mart.

The local Tree of Sharing is on display at the Chewelah Safeway. Those with plenty are asked to pick up a tag and bring a wrapped gift, with the tag taped to the outside, to the Chewelah Independent. Those wishing to receive a gift should sign up at the Chewelah Food Bank by Nov. 30.

The Pullman Kiwanis holds its annual pancake breakfast from 6:30 a.m. until noon on Dec. 2 at the Lincoln Middle School gym.

St. Maries
The Idaho Fish and Game Department wants to remind duck hunters not to overload their boats. Overloading causes poor handling in rough water and makes it possible to become swamped. The department strongly recommends wearing camouflage life jackets or float coats while boating and to remain seated when shooting.

Santa will ride into town on a red antique fire truck at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday to greet children by Coldwater Creek. At 3:30 p.m. the Presbyterian and the Sandpoint High School choirs and the the high school jazz band will perform holiday music.

Boundary Community Hospital will offer a cardio-pulmonary resuscitation class Dec. 12 and an American Safety and Health Institute first aid class Dec. 13, both at 6 p.m.

Post Falls Mazda is collecting donations for local food banks through Nov. 30.

Moscow Building Supply employees will go door-to-door in Moscow and Pullman collecting food for local food banks on Dec. 7.

The 14 people who won turkeys in the Silver Valley drawing were notified recently of their good fortune.

Libby
The Seeley Lake Sawmill will be closing in January due to high timber prices and a competitive lumber market, according to owners of the mill. Officials told their 95 employees the news Nov. 14 after laying off 30 employees two weeks earlier. The company has been in business for 50 years and is the area’s largest employer.
