How they scored First quarter
Washington State 3, Cal 0: Anousith Wilaikul 22-yard field goal. Five plays, 14 yards, 1:45. On a fourth-and-3, Cal had a bad snap, and WSU’s Adam Hawkins tackled punter Nick Harris at the Cal 20. After picking up a quick first down, the drive stalled.
Cal 7, Washington State 3: Chase Lyman 13-yard pass from Kyle Boller. Mark Christian Jensen kick. Six plays, 29 yards, 1:47. The Cougars stopped the Golden Bears on their second drive, but on the punt, WSU’s Michael Freeman ran into returner Collin Henderson as he was trying to field it. Cal’s James Bethea recovered the ball at the WSU 29. Boller used a screen pass to pick up one first down and then hit Lyman for the touchdown.
Second quarter
Cal 7, Washington State 6: Wilaikul 30-yard field goal. Sixteen plays, 68 yards, 6:08. The Cougars, aided by a personal foul on the Bears, drove down to the Bears 13. There, the Cougars had three straight holding penalties. The third was declined. So on third-and-24, Gesser found Milton Wynn across the middle to put the Cougars back in field goal range.
Washington State 14, Cal 7: David Minnich 6-yard run. Two-point conversion Gesser to Marcus Williams. Four plays, 18 yards, 1:44. Cal’s preseason All-America punter Nick Harris dropped the ball on a fourth-and-9 deep in Bears territory. WSU’s Jermey Thielbahr was there to pounce on it and give the Cougars excellent field position at the Cal 18.
Washington State 14, Cal 14: Boller 6-yard run. Jensen kick. Twelve plays, 65 yards, 4:05. The Bears went to the ground for their first substantial drive of the game. The Cougars had a chance to stop the Bears on a fourth-and-1 at the WSU 44. But Joseph Echema went around the right side for an 8-yard gain. The Bears kept it on the ground the next six plays and went in for the score.
Third quarter
Cal 17, Washington State 14: Jensen 20-yard field goal. Twelve plays, 51 yards, 5:06. The Bears had a first-and-goal at the 2 and failed to get a first down. First, the Cougars defense stopped Boller on a run. Then it was Saleem Muhammed who was stopped. And finally, Boller threw an incompletion to force the field-goal attempt.
Washington State 21, Cal 17: Williams 10-yard pass from Gesser. Wilaikul kick. Three plays, 12 yards, :45. Erik Coleman blocked a Harris punt and Adam Hawkins picked up the ball and ran it back to the Cal 12, setting the Cougars up with excellent field position. After two failed plays, Gesser went to a fade pass to Williams in the end zone. The pass was initially ruled incomplete, but after a delay, the officials overturned the call.
The WSU senior receiver had five catches for 90 yards and the game-winning touchdown.
