After four straight monthly declines, construction spending jumped by a stronger-than-expected 1.4 percent in August, powered by increased government activity.

Microsoft Corp. is taking a $135 million stake in Corel Corp., the Canadian software company that makes WordPerfect and products for the competing Linux operating system, the two companies announced Monday.

Boeing Co. and General Electric Co.’s aviation leasing branch, GE Capital Aviation Services, has ordered 74 Boeing Co. jets worth $5.5 billion and taken options on another 61, Boeing announced Monday.
