First Quarter
Boise State 7, Washington State 0: Brock Forsey 21-yard pass from Bart Hendricks. Nick Calaycay kick. Six plays, 33 yards, 3:00. On the Cougars’ first possession quarterback Jason Gesser fumbled trying to get a first down. The Broncos recovered at the WSU 33-yard line. On a third and 8, the Cougars sent a blitz, Hendricks picked it up, threw to the flat and Forsey was able to coast into the end zone.
Boise State 7, Washington State 7: Gesser 2-yard run. Anousith Wilaikul kick. Ten plays, 80 yards, 5:16. Aided by 43 yards in penalties against the Broncos, the Cougars answered BSU’s score. The big play was a 26-yard pass from Gesser to Marcus Williams wih 15 yards tacked on for a roughing-the-passer call.
Boise State 14, Washington State 7: Robby Snelling 1-yard pass from Hendricks. Calaycay kick. Seven plays, 74 yards, 3:25. Hendricks found Snelling earlier in the drive wide open for a 52-yard completion to take the ball to the Cougars’ 6-yard line. Then on a fourth-and-goal from the 1, Hendricks faked a hand off and found Snelling in the back of the end zone.
Second quarter
Boise State 14, Washington 10: Wilaikul 38-yard field goal. Eighteen plays, 43 yards, 7:00. WSU overcame a third-and-47 and a third-and-21 to keep the drive alive. The first conversion came courtesy a Broncos defensive holding call. The second came when Gesser scrambled out of the pocket and found Collin Henderson streaking across the field in Broncos territory.
Boise State 14, Washington State 13: Wilaikul 22-yard field goal. Twelve plays, 46 yards, 4:40. Backup quarterback Matt Kegel came in for his first play of the season and made it count. He took off on a draw play on third and 6 at the BSU 31. He got eight and kept the drive alive. On fourth down, the Cougars set up in a fake formation, but BSU took a time out and forced the field goal.
Washington State 19, Boise State 14: Henderson 14-yard pass from Gesser. Pass failed. Six plays, 70 yards, :43. Gesser and Williams again hooked up, this time for 27 yards to start the drive. Deon Burnett then took a delayed draw 34 yards around the right side to the BSU 9. After a penalty, Gesser found Henderson across the middle for the score.
Washington State 19, Boise State 17: Calaycay 46-yard field goal. Five plays, 54 yards, :29. With :02 left on the clock, Calaycay just made the field goal as it hit the crossbar and bounced through the uprights.
Third quarter
Washington State 26, Boise State 17: Adam Hawkins 2-yard run. Wilaikul kick. Six plays, 62 yards, 1:26. Gesser hit running back Brad Philley on an wheel route for a 37-yard gain down the sideline. David Minnich and Hawkins took over from there.
Washington State 29, Boise State 17: Wilaikul 34-yard field goal. Four plays, minus 1 yard, 1:56. Hendricks and Forsey missed each other on a handoff, and Rien Long dropped on the loose ball at the BSU 16. Kegel again came in and the Cougars had to settle for a field goal.
Washington State 29, Boise State 24: Davy Malaythong 9-yard pass from Hendricks. Calaycay kick. Four plays, 71 yards, 1:36. Hendricks burned WSU on a screen pass to Malaythong for the touchdown.
Fourth quarter
Washington State 35, Boise State 24: Farwan Zubedi 9-yard pass from Gesser. Run failed. Two plays, 11 yards, :40. Boise State’s Jerry Smith fumbled at the BSU 11. WSU’s Billy Newman recovered the ball.
Washington State 35, Boise State 27: Calaycay 27-yard field goal. Ten plays, 55 yards, 2:19. Hendricks and wide receiver Jay Swilley hooked up twice on the drive for a total of 47 yards. But the Broncos stalled at the WSU 10 as Hendricks threw three straight incompletions.
Boise State 35, Washington State 35: Lou Fanucchi 12-yard pass from Hendricks. Shawn Sway pass from Hendricks. Four plays, 64 yards, 2:04. Trailing late in the game, Hendricks went to the air three times for 53 yards and ran the ball once for 11 as the Broncos marched down the field and knotted the score.
Washington State 42, Boise State 35: Hawkins 1-yard run. Wilaikul kick. Eight plays, 39 yards, 2:48. The Cougars pinned the Broncos at the 2-yard line and then held on defense, setting up excellent field position at the BSU 39. Gesser hit Deon Burnett on a 20-yard screen pass to set up the gamewinning touchdown.
