M’S Have To Settle For Split

The slumbering Yankees woke up just in time.

Shut out for the first 16 innings of the American League Championship Series and in danger of losing twice at home, the Yankees scored seven eighth-inning runs Wednesday and beat Seattle, 7-1.

The seven-game series is tied at one victory apiece; Game 3 will be Friday night at Safeco Field.

The Mariners led, 1-0, entering the bottom of the eighth before the Yankees pounced on relievers Arthur Rhodes and Jose Mesa.

The winning pitcher was Orlando Hernandez, 7-0 with one no-decision in eight postseason starts.

The Mariners got six shutout innings from John Halama, who turned over a 1-0 lead to the bullpen for the seventh.

In the National League Championship Series, Mike Hampton won for the first time in the postseason, leading the Mets past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 Wednesday night in Game 1.
