Catholic charismatic conference planned
“Enter Into the Master’s Joy” is the theme of this year’s Inland Empire Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference scheduled for next Friday through Sunday at the DoubleTree Hotel on Sullivan Road. The event begins with on-site registration at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and concludes with a 10:45 a.m. Mass on Sunday.
The charismatic movement has existed in the Roman Catholic Church since the late 1960s. It is based on the belief that the Holy Spirit gives people gifts and inspirations, including healing, prophecy and speaking in tongues.
The movement began in an Episcopal church in 1963 and soon spread to other denominations, including the Catholic Church.
The featured speakers at this year’s conference will be Babsie Bleasdell and the Rev. Tom Forrest.
Bleasdell, a native of Trinidad, operates numerous ministries in her country. Forrest is the international director of Evangelization 2000, an effort to promote church renewal through prayer.
A youth track will be held on the same dates at St. Paschal’s Catholic Church, 2523 N. Park Road.
Cost is $30 per person, or $40 per couple or family. Cost for the youth event only (no parent attending main conference) is $20.

Methodist district to meet
The Spokane District of the United Methodist Church has been combined with the eastern part of the Walla Walla District to form the new Inland District. The first annual meeting of the new district is scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Colfax (Wash.) United Methodist Church, 109 S. Mill.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and the meeting will conclude at 3 p.m. All United Methodists in the Inland District are invited to attend.
No advance registration is required.
The meeting is free, though there will be a $6 charge for lunch. For more information call the district office at 838-3085.
Seminary president to speak
Dr. Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary, will speak on “Calvinists, Civility and the Common Good” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Seeley Mudd Chapel on the Whitworth College campus. The free lecture is sponsored by the Weyerhaeuser Center for Christian Faith and Learning at Whitworth.
Health workers invited to Mass
The Festival of St. Luke the Physician will be celebrated with a Mass for health-care workers at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel on the sixth floor of the Sacred Heart Doctors Building, 101 W. Eighth. The featured speaker will be Bishop William Skylstad of the Catholic Diocese of Spokane.
People of all faiths are invited to attend.
Gospel drama planned
Actor Leonard Defillippis will return to the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center Oct. 22 for his one-man performance of “The Gospel According to John.”
Defillippis is well known for his productions centering on various aspects of the Bible.
The two-hour performance begins at 4 p.m. at the retreat center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Road. It is appropriate for children over age 10.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and children under 12. For reservations call the center at 448-1224.
Tabernacle organist to perform
A recital by Clay Christiansen, organist at the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Latter Day Saints Stake Center at 1657 S. Blaine in Moscow, Idaho. Christiansen is one of three organists on staff at the tabernacle, and he has also performed as an accompanist for the well-known Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
His concert will feature a mix of classic and contemporary works by J.S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Hebble and John Weaver. Christiansen will also perform some original compositions.
The concert is free, and all are welcome. A reception will follow the performance.
