Athol Man Dies While Logging, Deputies Say

From Staff Reports

An 83-year-old Athol man who was found dead Friday afternoon was apparently killed while logging, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department.

A neighbor found Charles Day Hoit dead near his home at 24993 Cedar Mountain Road in Athol, according to a Sheriff’s Department press release issued Saturday.

The neighbor told responding deputies that she found him slumped over the steering wheel of his tractor in the woods 100 yards west of the house.

Hoit’s wife, Emma Hoit, had asked the neighbor to help her look for Hoit at 4:30 p.m. after she realized he was overdue, the release said.

Deputies who responded believe that Hoit was fatally injured while attempting to log his property.

Further details were not available late Saturday.
