William `Joe’ Short Dover, Idaho

Visitation for William Garner `Joe’ Short, 82, will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint.

Mr. Short, who was born in Vulcan, Alberta, died Friday.

He moved to Sagle with his family in 1920 and attended Sandpoint High School. He later worked at various jobs in Bonner and Boundary counties, including as a painter, and coal delivery driver for the Sandpoint Ice and Fuel Store.

Mr. Short never married due to his responsibility as the youngest child to look after his mother as she aged.

He enjoyed gardening, and was a member of the Bonner County Historical Society, and the Assembly of God Church, where he served as a greeter. He was also involved with the morning coffee club at Connie’s Cafe in Sandpoint.

Survivors include a brother, Donald Short of Beaverton, Ore.; a cousin, Marian Ebbett of Oregon; numerous nieces and nephews; and his adopted family, Bridgett, John and Thalia of Dover.

Eleanor Wright Careywood, Idaho

No service will be held for Eleanor Wright, 87, at her request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wright, who was born in Everson, Wash., died Friday.

She married Bill Wright in 1938 and the couple lived in California and Arizona.

Mrs. Wright had worked as an accountant. She spent winters in Bullhead City, Ariz., and lived in Careywood, Idaho, in the summers.

She moved to Careywood after her husband died in 1998.

She was past president of the Citrus Belt No. 70 Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants, the Order of the Eastern Star in Bullhead City and the Mohave Valley Nile Club in Phoenix.

Mrs. Wright was active in gardening and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Everingham of Careywood; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Guy `Pop’ Brooks Spokane

No service will be held for Guy O. “Pop” Brooks, 95. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brooks, who was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, died Saturday. He was a 60-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Brooks had worked in the timber industry and as a short order cook when he was a young adult. He then worked as a short-haul truck driver for Fuller Paint and retired in the late 1960s. He also delivered and installed glass windows and worked as a carpenter.

He was a member of and an usher at the Unity Church.

His wife preceded him in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Brooks and Nina Strong, both of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Judy Peelgren of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association or the Union Gospel Mission.

Helen (Schultz) Bright Spokane

Visitation for Helen G. (Schultz) Bright, 91, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for noon Saturday at the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Rosalia, Wash. Memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at Rosalia United Methodist Church.

Born in Plaza, Wash., Mrs. Bright died Monday.

She graduated from Rosalia High School and Deaconess School of Nursing.

Mrs. Bright worked as a registered nurse for 11 years in the newborn nursery at Deaconess Hospital. She was later a private duty nurse.

She was a member of the Deaconess Hospital Alumni and Manito United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Thurman Powell in 1973, and Dexter Bright in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Jim Powell of Greenacres; a stepson, Dexter Bright of Spokane; a sister, Maybelle Hilmer of Vancouver, Wash.; two grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Stephan Ward Spokane

Private memorial service for Stephen A. Ward, 68, will be held at a later date. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ward, who died Oct. 6, was born in Slope County, N.D.

His family moved to Harrison, Idaho, when he was 4. They later moved to Moscow, Idaho, and then to Deary, Idaho.

He enlisted in the Army in 1949 and served in the First Cavalry Division during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1951.

Mr. Ward returned to Idaho and worked as a logger.

In 1953 he married Fern Van Dyke and moved to Spokane. They later divorced.

He had worked in construction, as a logger and as a long-haul truck driver.

Survivors include a son, Timothy Ward of Spokane; four daughters, Jennifer Moulton, Rita Triplett, Diane Michels and Tina Bergman, all of Spokane; three brothers, Ted Ward of Spokane, Paul Ward of Moscow and Ed Ward of Coos Bay, Ore.; three sisters, Shirley Jones and JoAnn Hammerly, both of Moscow, and Penny Novak of Boise; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

DeAnn Pollock Martin Pinehurst, Idaho

Service for DeAnn Pollock Martin, 64, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pinehurst. Burial will be at West Hills Memorial Park in Yakima. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martin, who was born in Beaumont, Calif., died Monday.

She graduated from high school in 1954 and later lived in Yakima, where she worked as a secretary at Food Plant Engineering Co.

She was also a homemaker and member of the Mormon Church.

She returned to the Silver Valley in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Frank Turner III of Kennewick; a daughter, Sandra Murphey of Pinehurst; her father, DeVere Pollock of Pinehurst; two brothers, Steve Pollock of Post Falls and Kent Pollock of California; and seven grandchildren.

Wayne Steele Newport, Wash.

Viewing for Wayne A. Steele, 20, will be held today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Steele, who was born in Mission Hills, Calif., died Oct. 8 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Shelley, Idaho.

He grew up in the Rathdrum area and attended Lakeland Junior and Senior high schools in Rathdrum. He then lived in Spirit Lake, Idaho, for five years before moving to Newport three years ago.

Mr. Steele had worked in production at Litehouse Specialty Foods in Sandpoint. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, dirt-biking and family activities.

Survivors include his fiancee Teresa Lamb, and two children, Joshua and Kaylynn Steele, all of Newport; his mother and stepfather, Sharon and Darin VanArsdale of Spirit Lake; four brothers, Jonathan and Grant Steele, and Darin and Brandon VanArsdale, all of Spirit Lake; a sister, Leeann VanArsdale of Spirit Lake; grandparents, Don and Anna McConnell, and Cheryl Hoffman, all of California, and Gary VanArsdale of Washington state; and his great-grandmother, Virginia Branch of California.

Laveryne Dubee Spokane

Graveside service for Laveryne Dubee, 88, will be at 11 a.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane-area resident, Mrs. Dubee died Saturday. She was born in Four Lakes.

She graduated from Cheney Normal School.

In 1948 she married Vern Dubee.

Mrs. Dubee was an elementary teacher for District 81. For the last 10 years of her teaching career she worked with the school district’s program for blind and partially-sighted students. She retired in 1977.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Judi Allison, and a son, Mike Dubee, both of Spokane; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Peter Kom Coeur d’Alene

Funeral Mass for Peter R. Kom, 86, was Wednesday at St. Pius Roman Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial was at St. Thomas Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Kom, who was born in Lemmon, S.D., died Saturday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Lemmon and moved to Sandpoint in 1936.

Mr. Kom married Vera Saunders in 1937 and the couple lived in Sandpoint. They moved to Oregon before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1954.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles, St. Pius Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Lake City Good Sams II. He was also active in traveling.

Mr. Kom was a volunteer at Kootenai Medical Center for eight years.

Survivors include his wife, Vera; three sons, Donald Kom of Middleton, Idaho, Richard Kom of Boise and Thomas Kom of Hayden Lake, Idaho; a daughter, Kathy Gehlen of Coeur d’Alene; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Marvin Torgerson St. Maries, Idaho

Memorial service for Marvin G. Torgerson, 79, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries.

Mr. Torgerson, who was born in Kendrick, Idaho, died Saturday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Elk River, Idaho.

He served in the Air Force in Italy during World War II. Mr. Torgerson earned two Bronze Stars, as well as marksmanship and good conduct medals and several outstanding citations during his military service.

He returned to Idaho after the war and received a degree in zoology from the University of Idaho.

In 1961 he married Marjorie O’Keefe Olson. The couple lived in Bovill, Idaho, until moving to St. Maries in 1967. He worked as a clerk and then an accountant at Potlatch Corp. for 35 years.

He was a memher of the St. Maries Elks Lodge and the St. Maries Senior Citizens.

Mr. Torgerson enjoyed fishing, traveling and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter, Lorraine Barker of Ogden, Utah; a sister, Eva Mae Una of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, James Torgerson of The Dalles, Ore., and Delbert Torgerson of Lewiston; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Viola Wolfe Kenmore, Wash.

No service will be held for Viola E. Wolfe, 88, at her request. The Cremation Society Northwest is in charge of arrangements.

A former longtime Spokane resident, Mrs. Wolfe died Oct. 4. She was born in Missouri.

She worked as a waitress at the Bon Marche and was a member of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union Local No. 400.

Mrs. Wolfe moved to Kenmore in 1999.

Her husband of 36 years, L.J., died in 1998.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Garner of Post Falls; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

James Kuznicki Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Service for James Joseph Kuznicki, 63, will be held today at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. A reception will follow at Paddy’s bar and grill in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr Kuznicki, who was born in Buffalo, N.Y., died Saturday.

He grew up in Buffalo and attended Michigan State University, where he majored in electrical engineering before being drafted by the Cleveland Browns professional football team.

Mr. Kuznicki was a linebacker with the Browns from 1963-69. He had enlisted in the Navy Reserve in 1958.

He retired from the military as a Lt. Commander in 1979 after serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He had received three Purple Heart Awards, the Silver Star and a Bronze Star.

Mr. Kuznicki settled in the Coeur d’Alene area after his military retirement and worked for ServiceMaster for 20 years and also served as the director of facilities at Kootenai Medical Center for 10 years.

He was a member of St. Pius Roman Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

Mr. Kuznicki was active in softball, boating, golf and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Pam; a son, Jim Kuznicki of Fort Chaffey, Ark.; three daughters, Lori Kuznicki, Tami Kuznicki and Kami Kuznicki, all of California; a stepdaughter, Jenni Gibson of Post Falls; two stepsons, Jeff Rhodes of Post Falls and Bill Griesbach of Las Vegas; three brothers, Charles Kuznicki, the Rev. Daniel Lapinski and Robert Kuznicki, all of New York; a sister, Patricia Lee of Cleveland, Ohio; and 13 grandchildren.

Florence (Paulsen) Paeper Davenport, Wash.

Memorial service for Florence E. (Paulsen) Paeper, a lifetime Davenport resident, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport. Inurnment will be held at Mount View Cemetery in Davenport.

Mrs. Paeper, 81, died Sunday.

She grew up on the family farm near Davenport and graduated from Davenport High School in 1935. She attended Kelsey Baird Business School.

In 1942 she married Fred Paeper, and during World War II worked for Pettijohn and McCallum law firm.

After the war she and her husband owned and operated Paeper’s Variety Store in Davenport. She later worked as the city clerk for the town of Davenport and was also a homemaker.

Mrs. Paeper moved to the Ark Adult Family Home in Harrington, Wash., in 1997. She recently moved to the Lincoln Nursing Home in Davenport.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1977.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Doty of Davenport and Lauri Paeper of Des Moines, Wash.; a brother, Alvin Paulsen; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
