Alderson On Walker Watch

University of Idaho senior football player Willie Alderson was added to the Doak Walker Award watch list this week.

The award is presented to the nation’s top running back.

Alderson leads the Big West Conference with 107 yards rushing per game. He is No. 8 nationally in all-purpose yardage, with 165.5 per game.

Some 60 players are on the list.

Rowing

The Gonzaga men’s and women’s crew teams will open their fall seasons Saturday with 5,000-meter races at the Head of the Spokane Regatta on the Spokane River. Also expected to compete are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, North Idaho and Calgary, Alberta.

Racing will start at 10 a.m. east of the Argonne Street Bridge.

Track and field

Washington State’s Randi Smith failed to qualify for the final of the women’s 400-meter hurdles during the IAAF World Junior Championships in Santiago, Chile.

Smith ran 59.08 seconds in the preliminary heats. The fastest time was 56.16.

Volleyball

Stephanie Martin had 11 kills and finished with a .563 hitting percentage to power College of Southern Idaho (39-4, 7-1) to a 3-0 sweep at North Idaho (4-19, 1-8) in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
