Othello
The Adams and Grant County sheriff’s departments are cracking down on problem traffic areas, such as Killer Corner near Othello. Officers will pull over drivers for speed, aggressive driving, intoxication and a host of other infractions. Last weekend, officers pulled over 118 drivers, resulting in eight DUI arrests and 15 cars impounded.

Curlew
Carol Lievense has bid farewell to her students at the Curlew Job Corps. After 20 years working for the Colville National Forest at this program, Lievense is retiring. Lievense has held many positions in the Job Corps, most recently in human resources.

Cathie Gates, owner of the Electric City Tavern, says police are overzealous in enforcing DUI laws and driving customers away. “I’d like to complain about small-town cops hiding in the shadows and circling like vultures, waiting to nail people leaving the bars for DUI,” Gates told the City Council, vowing to pack the next meeting with tavern and restaurant owners. Gates says she has a right to make a living and needs cooperation from the city.

The Town Council recently passed an ordinance regulating any adult entertainment vendors. The ordinance requires a business license for the owner, as well as managers and entertainers. The document is very specific about attire, behavior and the building design itself. Business licenses can be revoked for any violation of code.

Cascade Mobile Home Park is hosting its annual Arts and Crafts Show and Bake Sale today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The community is located at 2311 W. 16th Avenue, off the 279 exit on I-90.

Chiropractor Peter Roesler has returned to Stevens County after six years in Arkansas and Missouri. Not only will he open his local chiropractic practice, but he will also be admitting horses. Roesler has studied how to treat horses at Palmer college in Iowa.

A candidates forum will be held Oct. 23 by the American Association of University Women, the Chamber of Commerce of Pullman, the Pullman League of Women Voters, and Aging and Long Term Care. The panel will include candidates and their representatives for state and federal office. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Pullman City Hall, 325 Paradise St. A second forum will be held Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall to discuss general election ballot issues and answer questions.

Blair Peet, his family and the newest Peet Shoe Dryer were featured on the October cover of Camping Life. Blair started selling the electric Peet Shoe Dryer about 32 years ago and in August a portable propane model hit the stores. The model costs about $70.

Mother and daughter artists, Gail and Kate Lyster, paint tiles with local landscapes, birds, animals and turn-of-the-century scenes. Their work is on display in the Mayor’s office in Sandpoint City Hall through Nov. 2 during business hours.

Prosecutor Denise Woodbury will present Sheriff’s Sgt. George Voyles, 54, a certificate of valor and a purple heart at noon Monday at Georgia Mae Plaza pavilion for injuries he received in the line of duty. Voyles and a deputy responded to a report of a man carrying guns at the Twin Rivers Canyon Campground. The officers confronted the man who held a shotgun in one hand, a Bible in the other and a pistol in a side holster. Gunfire ensued, and Voyles was shot in both thighs.

Career Automotive Education Day is Oct. 25. Students from surrounding schools will visit Coeur d’Alene Honda and Kia for an open house which includes a tour, explanations of career opportunities in finance, business and marketing.

At this year’s Health and Nutrition Fair, patrons can test their physical stamina, taste low-calorie treats, receive a free blood pressure check, a non-fasting or fasting cholesterol test for $3 and a lipid panel test for $10. The more than 70 exhibits include experts in massage therapy, pregnancy counseling and foot care in addition to bone density scanning. The fair is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Student Union Building.

The History of Idaho’s Silver Valley, 1878-2000 will presented by author Ray Chapman at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library as part of a history series presented through Nov. 2. by the library.

The library needs long-time residents to help identify features in a 100-piece collection of historical black and white photos donated to the Libby Library and the Heritage Museum for a 1976 bicentennial project. The library is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
