Adams County Ritzville

The Ritzville Area Chamber of Commerce has canceled Monday night’s candidate forum between the County Commission District 2 candidates Richard Johnson and Gary Weaver.

Ferry County Republic

Hunting season started with a bang. Hundreds of hunters hit the high country, resulting in scores of calls to local law enforcement complaining of trespassing and quarrels between hunters and landowners.

Grant County Soap Lake

Sexual abuse counselors are on hand during the Soap Lake Masquers Theatre presentation of “How I Learned to Drive” The play, which centers on a 16-year-old girl’s driving lessons, is actually a story of remembered verbal and sexual abuse. Counselors from New Hope are available after each show, and the program contains literature about sexual abuse. The play runs each Friday and Saturday night through Nov. 11.

Lincoln County Sprague

A local man has been taken into custody for threatening President Clinton’s life. Paul Scroggie, 49, was arrested by Deputy Chris English at the Viking Drive-In last week after Scroggie allegedly called the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department to tell of his plans to kill Clinton. The U.S. Secret Service has custody of Scroggie, who will go through psychological evaluation at Eastern State Hospital.

Pend Oreille County Newport

The city is looking for ways to balance its 2001 budget. An $87,000 difference between expenditures and revenues has the city considering contracting out services such as fire and police protection.

Spokane County Spokane

Holy Family Hospital will host a free seminar, Understanding Cholesterol: Getting the Low Down Oct. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the hospital’s Health Education Center. Dr. Jeffery Jameson will discuss the good and bad types of cholesterol and risk factors for coronary heart disease. Call 473-6960 to pre-register.

Stevens County Chewelah

A recent emergency drill, complete with supposed students armed with semi-automatic weapons, was held to help authorities with crisis planning. During the Oct. 13 drill, student shooters opened fire on students and faculty, and took a class hostage. It was conducted by the school district with and help from a medical team and Fairchild Air Force volunteers.

Whitman County Pullman

Jeffrey W. Martin has been chosen as the new chief executive officer of the Gritman Medical Center. Martin has served as CEO for Baptist Hospital in Liberty, Texas, and as chief financial officer for a hospital in Trinidad, Colo. Martin starts his duties immediately and has already named Kara Besst to the position of interim chief financial officer.

IDAHO

Benewah County Plummer

A forestry course will be offered by the University of Idaho with information on silviculture, forest ecology and health, and developing a management plan for property. The course will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 30 to Dec. 11 at the Tribal Wellness Center. Register ($35) by Wednesday by calling the Benewah County Extension office at (208) 245-2422.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Local artists wishing to display an item in the annual Holiday Invitational Art Exhibit are required to submit an entry from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 30 at the Pend Oreille Arts Council Gallery in the Old Power House Building, 120 Lake St. All art needs to be labeled with the artist’s name, address, phone number and media, and be tagged with the value even if it’s not for sale. Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Bunny Hodgson will receive this year’s Senator Vern Lannen Award at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Panhandle Health District office, 7402 Caribou. The award is given to a volunteer whose contribution improved the community’s public health or social well-being.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Meth is my Neighbor is a seminar on identifying a methamphetamine laboratory and what steps to take with law enforcement officials. The free class will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Lake City Senior Center, 1916 Lakewood Drive.

Latah County Moscow

The public is invited to the annual Make a Difference Day at the Moscow Community Garden. This year’s improvement day to expand paths and landscaping is is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Donations of canned food, household items and clothing are also being collected for the Sojourner’s Alliance.

Shoshone County Kellogg

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and Kellogg Job Service office will both open Monday in their new locations in the R-J Commercial Addition Business Park, 35 Wildcat Way. The IDHW will be in suite A and Job Service will be in suite B.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

A sexual harassment seminar will include overviews of sexual harassment, a hostile work environment, case law, policies, conducting an internal investigation and preventive measures. The Kootenai Job Service Workforce Center will hold the seminar from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 1 at the Venture Inn. Cost is $15 and includes breakfast. To register, call (406) 293-6282.
