Walk Against Hate Sunday

People of all denominations will gather Sunday at Spokane’s Chief Garry Park, 2500 E. Mission, for the second annual Walk Against Hate. The walk is billed as a way for the religious community to show its unity in opposition to the hate preached by racist groups.

The walk, sponsored by Churches Against Racism, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the park. The walk will conclude with a worship service at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church on the Gonzaga University Campus at 4 p.m. Call 329-1410 for more information.

Author will lecture

The guest speaker for this year’s St. Stephen’s Lecture Series is Neale Donald Walsh, well-known author of the “Conversations with God” books. His talk will focus on his new book, “Communion With God.”

The lecture is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at the WestCoast Grand Hotel at the Park, 303 W. North River Drive. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased by calling St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 448-2255. Tickets may also be purchased in advance at Auntie’s Bookstore and Huckleberry’s Market in Spokane and at the Book and Game Co. in Coeur d’Alene.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Christian concert at The Met

Several regional music groups will gather at The Met for the Alive and Active 2000 concert at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The lineup of the Christian concert will feature UPsyde, GodZone, C-Rob and Nikia.

The event is being sponsored by III Strong Entertainment, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the message of God through song and dance. Proceeds from the event will be used to finance UPsyde’s upcoming mission trip to England.

Claver honoree named

Denice “Denny” Murphy was awarded this year’s Sister Peter Claver Award in a ceremony Thursday. Murphy has a long history of volunteering her time in the community.

Over the years, she has worked with the Community Health Association of Spokane (CHAS), Spokane’s parish nurse program and the Fair Share Program at Gonzaga Prep. A registered nurse, Murphy currently serves on the boards of Providence Services of Eastern Washington, CHAS and the Parish Nurse Advisory Committee.

Sister Peter Claver served as president of Sacred Heart Medical Center for nearly 30 years. The annual award recognizes people who exemplify Claver’s qualities of dedication to their calling, leadership, community service and reliance on God.
