Obituaries

Carl Wegeleben Spokane

Visitation for Carl F. Wegeleben, 89, will be from 9 to 5 p.m. today and Sunday, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garland Avenue Alliance Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Wegeleben, who was born in Milan, Wash., died Tuesday.

He was a quality control crew leader for Kaiser Aluminum for 28-1/2 years.

An 88-year Spokane resident, Mr. Wegeleben was a volunteer firefighter for Spokane County Fire District 4 and a member of Eagles Lodge 2.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruth; two daughters, Joanne Neprud of Veradale and Shirley Wilson of Cottage Grove, Ore.; a brother, Harry Wegeleben of Yakima; 16 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Harold Kirk Spokane

Graveside service for Harold C. Kirk, 91, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kirk, who died Wednesday, was born in Providence, R.I.

During the 1940s and early 1950s he managed a softball team in Centerdale, R.I. He also played amateur baseball, soccer and hockey.

He moved to Spokane in 1953 from Warwick, R.I.

Mr. Kirk owned the restaurant in the Pedicord Hotel from 1953 to 1955. He worked as a security guard at Sacred Heart Hospital for 15 years and retired in 1974.

Mr. Kirk was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Senior Amateur Golf Association Team and the Senior Valley Bowlers.

His wife of 69 years, Hazel, died in 1998.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Higgin and Gail Dickson, both of Spokane, Joyce Harris of Greenacres and Dorothy Kaegi of Creston, Ohio; a brother, Warren Kirk of Naples, Fla.; three sisters, Elizabeth Garbett and Hazel Travis, both of Providence, and Ada Rushton of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Patient Care of Spokane.

Earl Baker Spokane

Graveside service for Earl James Baker, 83, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Baker, an 80-year Spokane resident, died Sunday. He was born in Minneapolis.

From 1952 to 1980 he worked as a car inspector for the Great Northern Railroad. He had also delivered milk for Halstone and Darigold dairies.

His wife of 32 years, Maxine, died in 1997.

Survivors include three daughters, Earline Burke of Spokane, Bonna Culver of Greenacres and Janet Wilcox of Hay, Wash.; a son, Carl Baker of Wasilla, Alaska; a sister, Phyllis McDougall of Spokane; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dorthy Madigan Spokane

Memorial service for Dorthy Dee Madigan, 73, will be at 11 a.m. today at Opportunity Free Methodist church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Newport, Wash., Mrs. Madigan died Tuesday.

She graduated from Colton (Wash.) High School in 1944.

Mrs. Madigan worked as a yard office clerk for Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads in Tacoma for 29 years.

She moved to Spokane in 1984. Mrs. Madigan worked for Spokane Valley attorney Jerry Trunkenbolz, for six and a half years. She retired in 1994.

She was a member of Opportunity Free Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Dolly Hewett of Arizona; a son, John Madigan Jr. of Sequim, Wash.; a brother, Carl Frasure; and three grandchildren.

Vernon Thornburg Spokane

Memorial service for Vernon N. Thornburg, 85, will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the home of Meegan Olson. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

An 80-year Spokane resident, Mr. Thornburg died Tuesday. He was born in Lexington, Ore.

He served in the Army during World War II in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He received a Bronze Star.

In 1968 he married Shirley Graham.

Mr. Thornburg worked as a meat cutter at Armour and Co. and in area grocery stores including Safeway and Rosauers. He retired in 1979. He was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union since 1939.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Autumn Thornburg of Everett and LaVeda Moses of Tum Tum, Wash.; a brother, Earl Thornburg of Spokane; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frances `Sally’ Tanner Coeur d’Alene

Service for Frances M. “Sally” Tanner, 69, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery, Riverview Section, in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Tanner, who was born in Baker, Ore., died Wednesday.

She grew up in Hayden Lake, Idaho, and graduated from Rathdrum (Idaho) High School and then attended beauty school. She worked as a beautician in the area and later operated her own beauty shop for several years. She then worked in the field off and on for most of her life.

She married Berl Tanner in 1952, and they lived in Hayden Lake for many years. They then moved to the Wolf Lodge area, where they lived for 25 years.

Mrs. Tanner had worked seasonally for the U.S. Forest Service since 1972.

She was a member of the Rambling Rovers and the Coeur d’Alene Eagles.

Her husband died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Larry Tanner of Spokane; two daughters, Linda Holecek of Athol, Idaho, and Judy Kempton; a sister, Edith Kiser of Hayden Lake; and three grandchildren.
