Wv Ends Drought, Defeats Cheney
Border League
It’s been a long time since the West Valley Eagles have beaten the Cheney Blackhawks.
But tough running by West Valley’s Matt Risley helped the Eagles to their first win over Cheney since 1987.
Risley ran for 164 yards on 31 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Eagles upset the Blackhawks 15-7 in Cheney on Friday night.
The loss kept the Blackhawks (5-3 overall, 4-3 league) from claiming a state playoff berth. At worse, Cheney has a tie for the Frontier League title. Cheney wraps up the regular season against Colville (0-7, 1-7) next Friday.
A Cheney loss and wins by Clarkston and West Valley would create a three-way tie for first.
Ben Woodard led the Blackhawks with 77 yards rushing on eight carries.
Woodard picked off a Tyler Baker pass with 5 minutes remaining, returning it to West Valley’s 40-yard line. The Blackhawks couldn’t capitalize, fumbling on the next play. With 50 seconds left, Craig McIntyre intercepted a Cheney Hail Mary pass.
Risley scored on a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for West Valley (4-4, 3-4). He also scored on a 5-yard run with 4:46 left.
Adam Pegg added 75 yards on 15 carries for Cheney.
In other Border League games, Brian Baugh passed for three touchdowns and rushed for three more as the Clarkston Bantams capsized visiting Colville 42-27. Baugh was 11 of 17 passing for 266 yards. Chris Lowry racked up 106 rushing yards on 21 carries for the Indians, and Josh Sampson caught seven passes for 144 yards… . Stephen Jackson rushed for 107 yards, Brenden Delewese rushed for 93 yards and J.C. DeVault rushed for 90 yards as the Sandpoint Bulldogs (6-3, 6-2) pounded the host Moscow Bears 42-17. The Bears fell to 3-6, 2-5… . Paul Ziegler rumbled for 147 yards and three touchdowns as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings (8-1, 7-1) wore down the Post Falls Trojans 28-6. Kyle Hutchison piled up 132 yards on 27 carries for the Trojans (1-8, 1-7).
