WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Amy Garza recently completed her internship at Disney World in Florida. She’s a senior in Washington State University’s hotel and restaurant administration program. More than 18,000 students applied for the internship and Garza was one of 2,000 chosen.

Ferry County Republic

Those planning to visit the Ferry County Fair this weekend should watch out for the bugs. The potential for bites this time of year is high, and people are warned to check their pop cans before drinking. Many people have gotten bee stings on their lips. Fairgoers should bring a jacket, as the weather cools quickly in the mountains.

Grant County Warden

Dental hygienist Dorothy Yamamoto’s SmileQuest program brings 20 retired dentists to town to give free and discounted dental services to 150 kids a week. Each dentist visits twice a month. The clinic is on the edge of town.

Lincoln County Creston

Creston needs a few emergency medical technicians. EMT crew chief Buddy Bryant says there are only six EMTs here now. There are five people who volunteer to drive the ambulance, but none is a certified EMT. Those interested should attend an upcoming EMT training series in Wilbur. Call (509) 636-2144.

Pend Oreille County Newport

City and county officials held opening ceremonies for the Urban Playground on Aug. 25. The skate park is already seeing heavy use from kids, some of whom organized, designed and helped build the park. Northeastern Washington Rural Resources employee Mary Sterling also helped a great deal.

Spokane County Spangle

Spangle will celebrate its Harvest Festival on Sept. 16 with a pancake breakfast, fun run, crafts fair and 3-on-3 basketball. Call Rick Mumby at 245-3221.

Stevens County Colville

The Colville Elks’ golf course, a nine-hole course that’s being expanded to 18 holes, has changed its name twice recently. First it was called the Colville Golf Club. Now, the board has decided on Dominion Meadows. Local pro Andy Hite says the name reflects the new “meadows-type” course. Grass should be springing up shortly, and it may be ready for play early next summer.

Whitman County Pullman

National Lentil Festival organizers are calling last weekend’s celebration a success. The parade brought nearly 90 entries, the cook-off 27 entries and the Tase T. Lentil Fun Run had a record 160 participants.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Residents without health insurance who don’t qualify for government funded medical care and meet certain income criteria will have a place to get medical treatment by mid-October, according to nurse practitioner Peggy Cuvala. Cuvala is a member of the board of directors that recently formed to start the nonprofit Community Clinic. The clinic will be open one night a week at the Health Services office and will be operated by volunteers.

Bonner County Priest River

The city council has changed its meeting from Monday (Labor Day) to Sept. 7 at city hall. It will be preceded at 7 p.m. by a public hearing on the 2001 budget.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

On Dec. 1, the local Habitat for Humanity will raffle a 10-by-12-foot log cabin. Habitat volunteers help build homes for low-income families. The cabin can be seen at the Boundary Trading Post parking lot. Tickets are $2 or three for $5 and can be purchased at the post.

Kootenai County Worley

The city received a $10,000 grant from the Idaho Department of Commerce as part of its Gem Community Action Grants program. The city will use the money for kitchen improvements in the Senior/Community Center.

Latah County Potlatch

Carol Culver will leave the Scenic Six Community Development Council Board and a replacement is being sought. The council will also have three board member positions up for election in November. The council is a nonprofit volunteer organization in northern Latah County. Those interested should call Kent Johnson at (208) 875-1175.

Shoshone County Osburn

A new secondhand store, set to open at the end of September, will train mentally and physically disabled employees to perform in the work force. The store will donate a portion of its proceeds to Idaho Special Olympics. The owners, Jack and Marianne Hull, have sited the Treasure Chest at 630 Mullan and are looking for volunteers. Lincoln County Libby

Libby High’s dress code now bars backless dresses, long spaghetti straps and sunglasses in the building. Some students were upset that the rules came out so late, as they had already bought their school clothes. Those in violation may be talked to, sent home or given something else to wear for the rest of the day.
