Adams County Othello

Five years ago, Adams County Juvenile Services set out to fight a rising wave of juvenile crime. At that time, the county had the highest juvenile crime rate in the state. Today, the county is making progress, with the latest crime statistics showing Adams County ranked 30th of 39 counties in juvenile crime. The county used aggression replacement training to teach basic life skills to kids who usually might try to solve problems with their fists.

Ferry County Republic

Efforts to restore and preserve the historic carousel at the Ferry County Fairgrounds recently got a shot in the arm. The Colville Confederated Tribes has donated 4,000 board feet of lumber for the work. The merry-go-round is in need of an all-weather building, and a 5,500-square-foot structure has been planned for the past two years. With this latest donation, it should be finished soon.

Grant County Grand Coulee

With daylight growing shorter, the Grand Coulee Area Chamber of Commerce is publicizing changes in the schedule for the laser light show at Grand Coulee Dam. The free shows will begin at 8:30 p.m. and run through Oct. 3. The Visitor Arrival Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call (509) 633-3838.

Lincoln County Wilbur

Butch and Trudy Rux claim a tornado may have passed over their rural Wilbur home on Aug. 24. At about 3:30 a.m., they were awakened by severe winds, with their wind gauge showing 60 mph. And, they said, the temperature was 84 degrees - unusually high for a nighttime temperature. After the storm had passed, the Ruxes said, they found a 60-foot-wide path of debris and damage over the house and beyond.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Voters will be receiving ballots for the Sept. 19 primary election in their mailboxes this week. Candidates have been campaigning for weeks because the majority of voters here vote by mail well before the official election day.

Spokane County Spokane

The Ferris High School Drill Team/Instrumental will hold a rummage sale Saturday to raise funds for a trip to Hawaii. The sale is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ferris High School bus ramp on East 37th Avenue.

Stevens County Chewelah

Avista Utilities is alerting residents of the southern part of the county about two planned power outages. An outage Wednesday will affect Heine Road south of Alm Lane, Quarry/Browns Lake, Red Marble, Cottonwood Road and Grouse Creek. Power is to be off from 8 to 10 a.m. for line repairs. A second outage, also planned on Wednesday, is to occur from noon to 2 p.m. People living near Jepson Road, Skands Road and East and West Jump Off Joe roads will be affected.

Whitman County Endicott

This summer, the Endicott grade school experimented with extending the school year to help students retain what they have learned. Last year’s first-graders attended school for a half day on Fridays this summer. Teachers found that the students returning to school this fall had not lost any ground over the vacation season.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Jerry Sampson recently started a construction business, Northwest Pole Building. The three-man crew works mainly in Shoshone, Kootenai and Benewah counties, but Sampson plans to expand into Montana. Sampson, his wife and four children live in St. Maries.

Bonner County Sandpoint

The Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14 to discuss a conditional use permit that Duane Peterson is seeking for a rock quarry. The quarry is six miles north of Priest River, west of state Highway 57. The meeting will be held in Courtroom 4 in the Bonner County Courthouse.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The proposed city budget, which includes a 3 percent hike in city property taxes, will be discussed on Tuesday during the regular City Council meeting.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Coeur d’Alene Sweet Adelines will present the annual barbershop show “October Tuneup” at 8 p.m. Oct. 14 in Schuler Auditorium at North Idaho College. Performers will include Sound Design, Ovation and the Lake City Harmonizers. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens; children under age 6 will be admitted free of charge.

Latah County Moscow

The Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the 2000 Mayor’s Arts Award. Categories include individual excellence in the arts, outstanding achievement in arts education and outstanding contributor as a promoter, patron or individual or business benefactor of the arts. Nominations must reach the commission by next Monday. Awards will be presented in October.
