Loss Puts Tribe In Must-Win Situation

The clock is ticking for the Spokane Indians.

Lefthanders Greg Withelder and Nial Hughes combined for 16 strikeouts, while allowing just four singles, to lead the Yakima Bears to a 2-1 victory Monday at Yakima County Stadium with the Northwest League season winding down.

Spokane trails Yakima by one game and division-leading Boise by two with two games to play. The Indians must win twice and hope the AquaSox beat Boise twice to make the playoffs. The Hawks edged Everett 5-4 in 11 innings Monday.

Spokane took the early lead Monday. Abel Martinez’s sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning scored Marco Cunningham and gave the Indians a 1-0 lead.

Spokane starter Zach McClellan made the lead stand up until the bottom of the fifth.

The Bears pushed across a pair of runs by getting half of their eight total hits in the inning.

Brennan King’s two-run single was all Yakima would need thanks to Hughes’ four innings of one-hit relief. Hughes picked up his first save of the season with the effort.

The Tribe will send lefthander Jon Metzger to the mound tonight against Yakima righthander Heath Totten.
