1999 standings: 1, Cusick (7-1, 8-2). 2, Inchelium (6-2, 8-3), Pateros (6-2, 6-4), Sprague-Harrington (6-2, 6-3). 5, Columbia (6-3, 6-3). 6, Odessa (3-5, 4-5). 7, Curlew (1-7, 1-7), Lind (1-7, 1-8), Wellpinit (1-7, 1-8).
New coaches: none reported.
Returning all-league players: First-team: Chris Burch (I) D; Aaron Henry (S-H) D; Jon Simmons (I) D; Jacolby Simpson (I) D; Colin Floyd (S-H) E; Bobby Sapp (P) E; Clanch Hoff (I); Jon Swan (I) OL; David Tonasket (I) RB. Second team: Floyd D; Dusty Person (Cus) D; Shawn Smith (O) D; Tonasket D; Burch E; Henry E; Simpson QB.
Look back: Inchelium forfeited a win to Cusick, jumbling the standings. The Hornets beat Pateros in tiebreaker before Inchelium, Cusick and S-H lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Coach’s comment: “Inchelium should be by far the team to beat in our league and in the state. Too many returners that were just flat-out studly last year,” Scott Worsham, Pateros.
Outlook: Hard to argue with Worsham but behind the Hornets it’s balanced… . Inchelium’s Tonasket, Simpson and Burch were all-state, along with Floyd of S-H… . Pateros has lost all-leaguer Bobby Sapp to a knee injury… . Cusick returns just one starter, quarterback Dusty Person, but 14 lettermen… . Columbia’s Kris Benson moves from QB to RB with the return of injured junior Ian Turner. He had a concussion in the third game.
