Adams County Ritzville

The first-ever Miss Ritzville, Dena Freese Roberts, spent part of the weekend parading down Main Street here, 43 years after first waving to the crowds. This time she led the Community Parade as grand marshal. The theme this year was “Our Heritage,” which corresponds with the 1957 float Roberts rode named “Home Sweet Home.”

Ferry County Republic

Department of Fish and Wildlife representative Kevin Robinette recently met with county commissioners to discuss riparian issues such as designation of endangered species and a possible new grazing plan. Also of interest were management practices, rural designation and water classification. Robinette says he will help resolve any differences of opinion on these issues.

Grant County Moses Lake

Big 5 Sporting Goods and Gottschalks have opened here in time for fall. The West Coast department store chain took over the old Lamonts building downtown. Both stores say their wares should keep shoppers from heading to Seattle, Spokane or the Tri-Cities.

Lincoln County Creston

Maintenance operator Martin Bigelow is on probation. Mayor Larry Haydon fired Bigelow in June for allegedly being disrespectful and making threats. However, many citizens and some council members came to Bigelow’s defense, saying he is a good employee. Haydon allowed Bigelow to continue working until the Aug. 17 council meeting, where he made his final decision to let him keep his job on a probationary basis.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Billy Lamprecht clearly remembers three centuries. Born in 1895, he recently celebrated his 105th birthday with staff and friends at Pend Oreille Pines care center. He is the picture of health and suffers only an occasional cold. He credits “good, clean living” for his long life. His only birthday wish was roast beef and cake.

Stevens County Colville

Eastern Washington University alumni in the Tri-County area are invited to an Eagles alumni gathering Sept. 12 at the Angler’s Restaurant. President Steve Jordan will be present to answer questions. The college wants to bring Eastern alumni together to get reacquainted and give information on events and changes. Call 1-888-EWU-ALUM. Whitman County Rosalia Five acres were damaged last week in a blaze started by a Case International baler along Highway 195 just north of town. The baler, which was being used to process bales of stubble, also burned.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Central Idaho Wolf Coalition Chairman Ron Gillett will discuss wolves and their impact on the area at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Eagles Lodge. The CIWC is dedicated to stopping the reintroduction of the wolf in Idaho. John Nelson of St. Maries organized the meeting and opposes wolf reintroduction.

Bonner County Priest River

School Night for Scouting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Priest River Elementary cafeteria for boys interested in joining. Meetings are Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at the Horizon Center of the Community Congregational Church.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Bonners Ferry Grain will close this month. It was built in the 1920s, said business manager Fran Oakes. It was used by farmers who had BFG store and broker their grain. Growers now build their own bins and broker it over the Internet. Oakes said the building’s future has not been determined.

Latah County Moscow

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will lecture on “Constitutional Interpretation” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the University of Idaho’s Student Union Building for the College of Law Bellwood Lecture. Free parking will be allowed at 3:30 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome west parking lot. Shuttle vans will transport people to and from the lecture.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Upcoming Wildcats sports events include a football game in Kellogg against Salmon at 7 p.m. Friday; a volleyball game in Wallace at 6 p.m. Wednesday; and a cross country invitational meet at 4 p.m. Friday, at home.
