For the first time in nearly 50 years, the Kalispel Indians are hosting a powwow in Sandpoint.

The Kalispels, who now reside primarily on or near their small reservation near Usk, Wash., were the original inhabitants of Sandpoint and the territory stretching from Thompson Falls to Chewelah, Wash.

The powwow, scheduled for Saturday in Lakeview City Park, is sponsored by the Mythweaver and the Kalispel Tribe. The Mythweaver is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the traditions of local Native Americans.

The powwow will include traditional dancing, arts and crafts demonstrations, storytelling in teepees and a traditional meal. The Spokane and Coeur d’Alene tribes also will be represented at the celebration, which begins at 10 a.m. and will continue until dusk.

Lakeview City Park is next to Memorial Field in Sandpoint. All activities are free with exception of the meal.
