Gonzaga leader at Auntie’s

Father Robert Spitzer, president of Gonzaga University, will discuss his new book, “The Spirit of Leadership: Organizing Creativity and Change in Organizations,” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main.

A Jesuit priest, Spitzer is a former professor of business ethics and directed the Institute of Professional Ethics at Seattle University.

In addition to being an author and motivational speaker, the Gonzaga alumnus is widely known for his mediation skills, having worked with the leaders of both sides of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Another book by Spitzer, titled “Healing the Culture: A Common Sense Philosophy of Happiness, Freedom and the Life Issues,” is expected to be released later this year.

Parish nurse training offered

The Providence Center for Faith and Healing will offer a new training session in its Parish Nursing program from Sept. 26 to Oct. 1 at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Road.

Parish nurses are registered nurses who provide holistic nursing care to members of a faith community. The program, sponsored by Gonzaga University and Sacred Heart Medical Center, is for people of all faiths.

The session will cover the role of the parish nurse, legal and ethical guidelines, resources available in the community, the steps necessary to begin a parish nurse program and the benefits of parish nursing.

There will also be a daily worship service.

Cost to participants is $250.

The fee includes materials, reference books, continuing education credits, meals and accommodations for five nights.

Episcopal women to meet

All women of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane are invited to attend the annual Episcopal Church Women meeting Sept. 22 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Several speakers are scheduled to attend, including missionary Carole Dennison and the Rev. James Waggoner, the diocese’s new bishop.

Cost is $8 per person, which includes lunch. For registration information, call St. Stephen’s at 448-2255.

Clergy invited to Yakima event

All Washington state clergy are invited to attend a pastors and spouses gathering in Yakima on Oct. 6.

The event, sponsored by Focus on the Family and the Greater Yakima Association of Evangelicals, will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Yakima.

The free event is designed to assist pastors in balancing their professional ministries and personal lives. The session will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Orientation scheduled

The Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries is hosting a religious leadership orientation Thursday at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

The session, which will run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will feature representatives of community agencies and faith-based ministries.

The program is designed for pastors, church staff and religious leadership. The cost is $8 per person if tickets are purchased by Tuesday, or $10 per person after. Lunch is included.
