Ev, CV Split In Football Debuts
Defenses played their part during mixed results in the season debuts of two Valley high school football teams on Thursday.
East Valley’s secondary had no antidote for the big-play capability of the Rogers Pirates during a 51-14 loss. But Central Valley’s defense had a major impact in its 26-0 shutout win over Mt. Spokane.
The new-look Knights played Rogers to a standoff up front and unveiled 194-pound junior running back Andrew Ettenger.
But the Knights couldn’t contain the Pirates’ big-play passing attack, particularly the short game that accounted for huge gains and quick scores.
The powerful Ettinger rushed for 153 of EV’s 250 yards, running out of the I-formation. He scored both touchdowns, including one on a 58-yard run.
CV’s defense produced two first-quarter touchdowns as linemen Kyle Osborne and Will Murphy wreaked early havoc.
But Mt. Spokane hung in with its quickness. and the game’s outcome was in jeopardy until Motie Curtis picked of one of three CV interceptions.
“The defense played solid,” said coach Rick Giampietri. “But we have to put together 48 minutes (of good play) instead of eight. We had four good minutes at the beginning and four at the end.”
The Bears missed a third-quarter scoring opportunity, the product of penalties and dropped passes, and the Wildcats chewed up the final seven minutes of the period with its second, unproductive long drive of the game.
A pass thrown up for grabs because of CV’s defensive rush, was grabbed by Curtis at the goal line, enabling the Bears to dodge a bullet.
It was Mt. Spokane’s last offensive gasp and CV padded its shutout win with two scores in the game’s final five minutes.
Next up for the Bears is North Central Thursday at Albi Stadium. EV hosts Shadle Park next Friday.
