N. Carolina St. 41, Indiana 38: Freshman Philip Rivers passed for 401 yards and five touchdowns, three of them in the final quarter, as the Wolfpack (2-0) rallied from 12 down in the final few minutes to defeat the Hoosiers (0-1) at Bloomington, Ind.

The go-ahead touchdown came with 54 seconds to go on a 47-yard pass to Koren Robinson.

Cincinnati 12, Syracuse 10: Jason Mammarelli kicked a 47-yard field on the final play of the game to give the Bearcats (2-0) their victory over the Orangemen (1-1) at Cincinnati.

Jonathan Ruffin had three fourth-quarter field goals before giving way to the strong-legged Mammarelli, who made his first career field goal after four misses before Saturday.

Pittsburgh 34, Bowling Green 16: John Turman came off the bench to throw three touchdown passes as the Panthers (2-0) defeated the Falcons (0-2) at Bowling Green, Ohio.

Northwestern 38, Duke 5: Damien Anderson ran for a career-high 187 yards and two long TDs as the Wildcats (2-0) beat the Blue Devils (0-2) at Evanston, Ill.

Iowa State 37, UNLV 22: Sage Rosenfels passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns and the Cyclones (2-0), helped by a flurry of three scores in a span of 2-1/2 minutes, beat the Rebels (0-1) at Ames, Iowa.

Western Michigan 27, Iowa 21: Jeff Welsh passed for 216 yards and a touchdown and Jared Pike thwarted Iowa’s final drive with two key sacks as the Broncos (1-1) defeated the Hawkeyes (0-2) at Iowa City, Iowa.

Ohio 23, Minnesota 17: Ohio halfback Chad Brinker had a touchdown catch, threw a scoring pass and also ran for a touchdown as the Bobcats (1-1) upset the Golden Gophers (1-1) at Minneapolis.

West

Air Force 31, BYU 23: Mike Thiessen tied a school record with four touchdown passes, two each to Ryan Fleming and Qualario Brown, as the Falcons (2-0, 1-0 Mountain West) used an uncharacteristic aerial assault to beat the Cougars (1-2, 0-1) at Air Force Academy, Colo.

Colorado St. 41, ETSU 7:Cecil Sapp, making his first career start, ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns as the Rams (2-0) defeated the Division I-AA Buccaneers (1-1) at Fort Collins, Colo.

South

Kentucky 27, South Florida 9: Jared Lorenzen threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats (1-1) defeated the Bulls (1-1) at Lexington, Ky.

Virginia 34, Richmond 6: Dan Ellis accounted for 336 total yards (299 passing, 37 rushing) and two touchdowns and the Cavaliers defeated the Division I-AA Spiders at Charlottesville, Va.

LSU 28, Houston 13: Josh Booty threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and Damien James intercepted two late-game passes as the Tigers (2-0) held off the Cougars (0-2) at Baton Rouge, La.

Memphis 28, Louisiana-Monroe 0: Travis Anglin and Darche Epting scored two TDs each, leading the Tigers (1-1) over the Indians (0-2) at Memphis, Tenn.

Maryland 17, Temple 10: LaMont Jordan, the nation’s leading active rusher, was limited to 62 yards on 22 carries but scored two TDs as the Terrapins (1-0) beat the Owls (1-1) at College Park, Md.

Louisville 52, Grambling St. 0: Dave Ragone threw four first-half touchdown passes, to lead the Cardinals (2-0) to a rout of the Division I-AA Tigers (1-1) at Louisville, Ky.

North Carolina 35, Wake Forest 14: Julius Peppers returned a fumble 12 yards for a touchdown and Bosley Allen had two long scoring plays in the fourth quarter as the Tar Heels (2-0, 1-0 ACC) beat the Demon Deacons (0-2, 0-1) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

East

Penn St. 67, Louisiana Tech 7: Rashard Casey threw a school-record tying five touchdown passes as the Nittany Lions (1-2) routed the Bulldogs (1-2) at State College, Pa.

Boston College 55, Army 17: Tim Hasselbeck threw a 75-yard TD pass to Dedrick Dewalt on the first play of the second half as the Eagles (1-1) routed the Cadets (0-2) at West Point, N.Y.

Rutgers 59, Buffalo 0: Mike McMahon threw for 249 yards and five touchdowns for the second straight week and the Scarlet Knights (2-0) buried the Bulls (0-1) at Piscataway, N.J.

Texas A&M 51, Wyoming 3: Mark Farris hooked up with Robert Ferguson on a 93-yard touchdown pass - the second-longest in Texas A&M history - as the Aggies (1-1) defeated the Cowboys (0-2) at College Station, Texas.

Oklahoma St. 36, Tulsa 26 Tony Lindsay threw three touchdown passes, all in the first half, as the Cowboys opened their season with a victory over the Golden Hurricane (0-2) at Tulsa, Okla.

UTEP 37, SMU 20: Rocky Perez threw three first-half touchdown passes, two to Lee Mays, as the Miners (1-1, 1-0 WAC) defeated the Mustangs (1-1, 0-1) at El Paso, Texas.
