Zags Upend Columbia

The Gonzaga University men’s soccer team scored two goals Sunday in the second half and beat Columbia University 2-1 at the Diadora Cup in San Diego, Calif.

Gonzaga forward Brian Ching scored the winning goal off of a free kick by Abbas Faridnia in the 75th minute.

Gonzaga midfielder Jason Kuska had scored less than a minute earlier to tie the game at one-all.

The Zags (2-2) were down 1-0 at the half after an unassisted goal by Columbia’s Michael Ching.

Goalkeeper Gunnar Magnusson had 4 saves for Gonzaga. The Zags outshot Columbia 23-9.

Whitworth College beat host Montana State University-Billings 1-0.

Whitworth forward Herbert Barbosa scored the games only goal on a penalty kick in the 67th minute.

The Washington Huskies blanked Akron 3-0 to win the Adidas Portland State Invitational tournament in Portland.

It is the fifth time in 10 appearances the Huskies (2-2-0) have won the tourney.

Women’s soccer

Washington State’s Katrina Stroh came up with her second game-winning goal of the season for a 1-0 win over Navy at the Naval Academy Tournament in Annapolis, Md.

The win was the third of the season for the Cougars (3-1-0).

Stroh, who also came up with the overtime game-winner at Utah in the Cougars’ season opener, scored with 10 minutes remaining in the second overtime.

Deka DeWitt set a school record with her 15th career assist on the play.

Whitworth College shut out Rocky Mountain College and Heather Sale scored two goals and an assist in a 6-0 Pirates win.

Dalyce Young had two assists for Whitworth.

Whitworth outshot Rocky Mountain 27-3.

Walker Loseno scored two goals as Gonzaga shutout Eastern Washington 5-0.

Katie Carpenter and Sara Streufert each had a goal and an assist. Megan Black had two assists and reserve Katie O’Brien added a goal.

The Zags outshot the Eagles 24-10.

Girls volleyball

Mead School earned second place at the 2000 Northwest Volleyball Invitational tournament, in Walla Walla, after losing in the finals to Presentation High School of San Jose, Calif.

Middle blocker Kari Vagstad and Setter Wendy Baker of Mead earned spots on the all-tournament team.

Post Falls middle blocker Aubree Johnson also made the team.
